Anti-Keystone billionaire rattles Democrats

BOSTON — San Francisco billionaire Tom Steyer is giving Democrats a taste of the divisive, big-spending primary battles that have caused Republicans so much heartburn over the past four years.

And he says it’s for their own good.

The former hedge fund trader-turned-philanthropist is bankrolling a far-flung political operation pushing environmental causes and candidates, including his pricey effort to torpedo the Keystone XL oil pipeline. He's increasingly drawing scrutiny for trying to take down the Senate candidacy of Massachusetts Rep. Stephen Lynch, a Democrat who has expressed support for Keystone.

Steyer is signaling that his efforts against Lynch are just the beginning of an aggressive political expansion that could target Democrats in other races who go against environmental causes.

The delineation of philanthropist is way overused in today’s society, especially describing Marxists.

I don’t see it as much of a plus for our side.

He’s just trying to help extreme liberals defeat slightly less extreme liberals.

And will likely bankroll the extreme liberal in the general election.

I agree on Soros.
Unfortunately there’s a sh!tload of limousine liberals in the pipeline to replace him.
It seems like every internet mogul is a “progressive” Brin, Page, Schmidt, Musk, Zucky, Bezos, etc.

I see it as a tremendous opportunity. This is not just an extreme Democrat. This is an extreme white liberal democrat, pushing things that only extreme white liberals care about. Outside Boulder, Berkely, and San Francisco, middle class people who are thinking of jobs want this pipeline. People who want energy security so they don't have to send their sons to the middle east to fight want this pipeline.

This is something that can be used as a wedge issue to drive stakes into the democrat coalition. What we need to get blue collar and racial minorities to understand is that rich white liberals still control the democrat party, and are using it to the detriment of the American people.

The democrat coalition has held together despite groups in the democrat party having exclusive or even competing interests. Time for us to fight on their turf.

This is an extreme white liberal democrat, pushing things that only extreme white liberals care about.

Can I offer some edits?

This is an extremely wealthy white liberal democrat, who feels guilty about his wealth pushing things that will punish average income taxpayers and permanently crush poor people with unaffordable energy costs. All over a non issue that only extremely wealthy white liberals pretend to care about just to get hugs from their fellow wealthy white leftists.

God save us from people with guilt complexes.

Some Democratic operatives fret that Steyer and other mega-donors could set up their party for a repeat of what happened to the GOP in 2010 and 2012, when ideologically fueled Senate primary challengers backed by super PACs and other outside groups defeated more mainstream Republicans before losing in general elections.

True believers tend to overplay their hands, especially in midterm elections.
