Amid Pyongyang bluster, missile launch feared ( North Korea threats )

As tensions mount on the Korean Peninsula, Wolf Blitzer explains what's behind the threats and what's at stake in a special edition of "The Situation Room," Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on CNN.
Are you from South or North Korea? Concerned about the latest crisis? Send us your thoughts.

(CNN) -- Missile and launch components have been moved to the east coast of North Korea in the "last few days," a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the information told CNN on Thursday.

This comes as indications emerged that North Korea, which unleashed another round of scathing rhetoric accusing the United States of pushing the region to the "brink of war," could be planning a missile launch soon.

The components, the official said, are consistent with those of a Musudan missile, which has a 2,500-mile range, meaning it could threaten South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia.

The United States has been looking for a hidden North Korean east coast launch site or mobile launchers, a concern because a launch from the east coast would go over Japan, the official said.

It is believed a missile launch would be a "test" launch rather than a targeted strike. That is because it appears the North Koreans have only moved the components so far. The United States is waiting to see whether North Korea issues a notice to its airmen and mariners to stay out of the region.

Communication intercepts in recent days also seem to show that Pyongyang could be planning to launch a mobile ballistic missile in the coming days or weeks, another U.S. official said.

Junior needs to be told that he’s targeted and he’ll be first to die.

Where our Country is foolish because we have the ability to detect a ballistic missile launch by NK and why in the hell don't we shoot it down. Then warn NK one more launch and you better convert your army to cleaning up the soil that turned into glass.

I could swear that we were told during the 2008 campaign that North Korea, Iran, Venezuala were tiny countries, and we didn’t need to worry about them as a threat.

Gosh...who was it that said that??

I don’t think so. He’s bluffing at poker with all low cards and expects us to bail him out again.

And my bet is that we will do exactly that. They're probably busy working up the right number as we speak.

Young Mr Kim needs to realize that a single, or even a handful, of mid-range missiles is not enough for a campaign against the developed world. Firing off a round or three is only going to make people angry.

We could blot out the sun with Tomahawks, if we really wanted to.

Liquid fuel missile. US intelligence should be able to discern if and when fueling takes place. Bomb the launch site in mid fueling. Missile goes boom. Launch personnel go boom too.

Pour les autres.

Unless they’re EMP’s, which they may already have in orbit, just waiting activation. If so, by aiming it at a huge hole in our southern-facing radar, they could put one right above the middle of the US and send the entire nation back to the dark ages, killing 200 million people within a year or two.

That’s according to a guy who was an advisor on President Clinton’s North Korea Commission. I’ll fetch the link in a moment.
