Mark Sanford wins primary; faces Steve Colbert's sister

Disgraced former Governor Mark Sanford easily won the runoff election for the Republican nomination in South Carolina's First Congressional District. He will face Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of comedian Steve Colbert, in the special election next month.

From The Hill:

The former governor's runoff win seemed likely as of two weeks ago, when he finished more than 20 percentage points ahead of Bostic in the first round of voting. Bostic got off to a slow start in the two-week primary runoff, hampered by a lack of funds, and while he secured some high-profile endorsements, including from former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), he didn't have the time or money to give Sanford a serious challenge.

The district is heavily Republican -- Mitt Romney won it with 58 percent of the vote -- but Colbert Busch has run a strong campaign so far, focused on her business career. National Republicans admit that Sanford's baggage and the unpredictability of special elections mean this race could go either way.

Recent polls reflect that reality: An internal poll from Colbert Busch's campaign and one from the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling found her with a narrow lead over Sanford. While many more Republicans were undecided in both polls and are more likely to vote for Sanford, he'll have to work hard to win the May 7 general election.

Colbert Busch's campaign was quick to slam Sanford following his primary win.

"The families of this district need a representative who they can trust," Colbert Busch campaign spokesman James Smith said. "Mark Sanford simply has the wrong values for our community -- whether that's his terms as Governor or the last time he was in Congress, where he opposed commonsense measures like the Violence Against Women Act, which provides shelters and resources for domestic violence survivors.

The problem with politics is it’s rife with politicians.

I empathize with conservatives in that district.

In 1986, conservatives in California were saddled with a horrible choice for US Senate as Democrat Alan Cranston, an old hard-core lefty who was running for re-election, faced off against Rep. Ed Zschau (rhymes--appropriately--with Mao), a Vito Marcantonio Republican.

Some conservatives voted for Zschau because Cranston was so bad, and they wanted the GOP to keep control of the Senate, some voted for Cranston because they knew he would only serve one more term, and they feared that Zschau, being young, would be there forever. I wound up going third party.

Sanford will win this fairly easily. There is also a “Green Party” candidate on the ballot to siphon off some of the liberal vote.

And again Republican’s shoot themselves in the foot by running the one candidate that can, and probably will, lose what should have been a slam dunk race.

See my post #23. The 1986 US Senate race in California should have resulted in a Republican pickup. Incumbent Alan Cranston was vulnerable, and there were about 12 candidates vying for the nomination. Of these, 11 were conservative and one--Ed Zschau--was a leftie.

The conservatives campaigned hard against one another, but eventually one, Bruce Herschensohn, emerged as the frontrunner. Lesser candidates began to drop out and support Bruce, but Mike Antonovich continued to run negative ads against Bruce late in the campaign.

Zschau won by taking only a third of all the votes cast, and since there was no runoff, he got the nomination--and went on to lose the race.

Supporting perverted Republicans makes it very hard to defend conservative values. Gay marriage, serial marriage, abortion and adultery are all part of the same sickness. Conservatives need to oppose ALL of it.

"Hey boss! Sanford won the primary in SC!"

"Ah, Republicans! The gift that keeps on giving!"

I highly doubt that. Sanford was consistently a fiscal conservative

Because nothing speaks "Fiscal Conservatism", like jetting down to Buenos Aires on the taxpayers' dime.

I’ve looked at some of her “non-pr” photos.
On a scale of 58 yr old female Democrats, she’s a 9.5

Sanford should have evolved into a homo instead of chasing Pan American skirt. The GOP would have held the door open for him and rolled out the rainbow carpet.

Somehow South Carolina survived his absence—no South Carolinian diplomats were killed, Uruguay didn’t invade, and no asteroids fell on the state.

Oh well ok then, that makes it perfectly okiley-dokiley.

WRONG...

“Before leaving office as governor, Mark Sanford avoided impeachment but was censured by the Legislature over state travel expenses he used for the affair. He also had to pay more than $70,000 in ethics fines — still the largest in state history — after Associated Press investigations raised questions about his use of state, private and commercial aircraft.”

And Bruce Herschensohn was nominated for the U.S. Senate in 1992 giving us Barbara Boxer.
