Posted on 04/02/2013 5:22:14 PM PDT by PilotDave
According to the solicitation (HSFLAR-13-Q-00019), DHS is ordering ammunition in .45 long Colts, .45 ACP, .22LR, 30-30, 12 gauge shotgun shells, 410 gauge shotgun shells, .357, and 7.69x39mm. Thats quite a spread for DHS.

They said they were buying in bulk to save on costs. Now they realize that their firearms don’t all take the same bullets???
A valid assumption. However, how many ammo manufacturers would be willing to refuse a contract from DHS double, triple or quadruple the price on the open market?
It wouldn’t surprise me if they offered a dollar a bullet.
This makes it obvious that DHS is purchasing for the purpose of distorting the market.
They have no use for .45 Colt ammo and very little for .22 or .410.
I am not being critical of either, but pointing out the fact that it has probably been 100 years since any military or LEO organization has used ..45 Colt ammo.
Well, maybe 75 years.
45 long colt? 7.62x39?
By the calibers mentioned, it appears that DHS folks intend to become cowboys/cowgirls. ;-) Or that they intend to choke supplies of even those calibers, until gun control bills are passed.
And 30-30. Last I heard of LE using that was when the executed Gary Gilmore by firing squad in Utah.
With this spread, there can't be any other reason.
Are any ammo mfgrs publicly traded?
If so I’d guess the regime and its affiliates have invested heavily there prior to the buying program.
I’m certain they’ve gone heavy into firearms mfg investments.
> I’ve been thinking, under my tinfoil cap, are they creating
> the ammo shortage by just buying it ALL up with the play
That, yes, and they’re giving it to the bloody, genocidal Moslem savages in Egypt, “Palestine”, Syria, Jordan, and Libya.
Meanwhile, we have a sequester, doncha know.
We don’t have enough money for “essential services”, doncha know.
But we have plenty of money to dry up the ammo supply and give billions of dollars worth of weapons and ammo to the Mahometan savages.
or pass an ammo tax
We will be attacked. Just the fact that Obambi's handlers refuse to promote any generals who will not kill American non-combatant citizens right here in America tells me that something very tragic and horrible is being planned by Obozo's handlers.
It's his handlers I worry a lot about . . . not the stupid ass in our White House . . . he's out trying to shoot baskets and play golf. It's his handlers we should fear.
Just what is planned? I'd hate to find out.
Exactly what I was wondering.....they couldn’t be that sinister could they?........./sarc
Hmm - .45 Long Colt, .30-30, .410 and 7.62x39?
Sounds like a bunch of DHS agents put in a requisition for ammo that fits their own personal firearms. The people in procurement either don't know enough to question the purchase or they're in on it.
This is either BS or very very disturbing. I find it difficult to believe they have need of a 7.62 x 39 rifle. Or 22 L.R.
I have - er had, before my tragic boating accident, a Rossi Circuit Judge that shot both .45 Colt Long cartridge AND 410 shotgun shells
It was a rifle built like a 5-shot revolver
I’m also wondering of the ammo shortages are worldwide?
WTF. I didn’t know DHS used 22LR or 30-30...

A guess from an old country boy:
Nothing until after the 2014 congressional elections. That would tip their hand.
Unless there is an uprising or major riot that forces them.
They have to make their move between 2014 and 2016.
After 2014, look out.
You will find out and I doubt that you will like it.
Hmmmm...how about they buy all the illegal drugs on the street in the same manner and then dispose of them...oh, I’m sorry, that would actually be good for the country.
I got three Russian Makarov automatics a few years back.
They are packed in a box somewhere... not sure what type ammo they take. I wonder if I could get ammo for them?
Bought them because they seemed really cheap at 75$ each.
Had two clips that came along with each.
I truly believe that they are buying it for nefarious purposes. That being said, it is still a serious waste of government funds. No military organization on earth would dream of supplying its troops with such a proliferation of calibers. Congress ought to pass a bill limiting Federal law enforcement and executive agencies to using only 9mm for handguns and SMGs, 7.62 NATO for rifles (both the same ball ammo the US military has to use) and 12 gauge for shotguns. Standardization would save the taxpayers a lot of money.
I doubt not that there are individuals in the LEO profession who carry a .45 Colt by personal choice, but I was referring to an agency that issues them to all personnel and purchases that ammo for the entire department.
I don’t thing you will find one.
I own two myself, and ALWAYS carry one or the other when I am not in the city.
When in the city where things happen at arm’s length, I prefer a snub nose.
The "odd" calibers are in small quantities (4,000 rounds for long colt, 4,680 for 30-30). I'm guessing somebody wants to do testing on how well various calibers do in penetrating various things, like body armor.
45 Long Colt - 250 gr. JHP total rounds 4000, 200, bx;
LI 002: 45 ACP 230GR JHP 1000 rounds per box total rounds 20,000, 20, mx;
LI 003: 22 LONG RIFLE CCI GREEN TAG COMPETITION RIMFIRE AMMUNITION total rounds 40,000, 400, bx;
LI 004: 30-30 160 gr. - this is being used for a Government gun. total rounds 4,680, 234, bx;
LI 005: 12 GAUGE #8 BIRDSHOT WINCHESTER AA LIGHT TARGET AA128 total rounds 20,00, 80, bx;
LI 006: 410 GAUGE #9 WINCHESTER AA TARGET AA4109 total rounds 10,000, 40, bx;
LI 007: .357 MAGNUM 180 GRAIN JHP total rounds 6,000, 300, bx;
LI 008: 7.69X39MM 123 GRAIN total rounds 5,000, 250, bx;
I’d also like to know exactly what they are doing with it. Could they be destroying it?
The Makarov takes its own cartridge, 9mm Makarov, which is ballisticly very similar to .380
That sounds like a plausible guess, imo.
This is just one order that has leaked out. How much don’t we know? This is not the complete picture. A tiny slice..
Could be sitting in a warehouse next to the cheese....
My God, we have a thinker in our midst.
I suspect you are correct. Someone told them that there are lots of flyover country boys that have those calibers and they need to know how to protect themselves.
That makes sense.
It also makes the 1.6 billion .40’s and 2700 armoured vehicles more ominous.
“Lets arm ourselves and be sure that we are protected against the red necks with .45 colts, 30-30 lever actions...”
Ominous, ominous ominous....
Indeed. There’s no legitimate reason for the Feds to purchase .22 LR other than to depress the civilian market. None.
Destroying it would be too stupid for words; that's like buying used cars just to destroy them. Even Obama isn't that stupid . . . is he?
The DHS is doing multiple things here 1) Tracking everyone who posts links to the site and creating a massive database of gun owners (with your comments on the matter). 2) Creating distrust of the government with the obvious misuse of taxpayer funds to buy ammunition not used for law enforcement.
Link analysis software can be used to cross reference database entries like the one created by team Obama in the last election (and openly praised via various news outlets). Big data is here and they can record everything you google or post on Facebook. Storage is cheap and the software exists to keep everything you post for more than six months.
They don't. If they are buying *these* calibers in bulk, as well as .40, then the reason is *not* what they have been saying publicly, or in other words, they are lying to those in Congress who have previously questioned their ammunition purchases.
This basic lack of candor demonstrates two things.
A. a healthy mistrust of government is essential.
B. There are plans currently in the works, which they are privy to, which if were publicly known, would *not* be well-received...
Not just 45 caliber, but 45 LONG cartriges....
What kinds of guns use 45LC?
Some 410 shotguns ALSO shoot 45cal LC
I can only think of one and one pistol.
If they are buying 30-30 in 160 grain then they are buying the Hornady Lever Evolution... not the regular 150 or 170 hunting rounds, supporting the idea that they are testing it against body armor.
Or How about, “Let’s buy ammunition for the large variety of firearms we’ll be seizing from American citizens.”
Small quantities can also be used for lab testing purposes. The FBI keeps a library of all known ammunition sold in the US for comparison purposes. A bullet fragment from a crime scene or dead body can be traced to a manufacturer by chemical analysis.
is this dhs credit or are they paying cash?
I’m sorry, but this is bullsh*t.
If you, as a patriot, can’t figure out where to get tons of free government ammo, you’re not paying attention.
But keeping quiet does not protect you because the ultimate end of all of this monitoring will be to monitor what you read.
Like reading Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh will put bad marks by your name.
Reading the daily kos will put a gold star beside your name.
Imagine the stacks and stacks of ammo stored in nice clean warehouses. What would happen if American Citizens got their hands on such a stash, instead of Marxist Traitors?
A special order manufacture at enormous cost based on some dimwit making a typo.
9x18mm...Very nice CCW piece...I've had one for years..Love it...Strong and very accurate..Ammo use to be cheap, but now runs about 38-42 cents per round.!! Everythings gone crazy.....
That's for their wore out AK's.
You make a very good point! And perhaps even more telling is it only being 90,000 rounds.
