Underestimating North Korea and Iran

Despite North Korea's successful long-range missile test in December 2012, and now its third successful nuclear test on February 12, 2013, the Obama administration and the press keep reassuring the American people that North Korea is not yet a fully fledged nuclear weapons state - that a North Korean nuclear missile threat to the United States is still years in the future.

The facts do not support this judgment. North Korea is already a major nuclear threat to the United States--an existential threat.

...

The press appears to have forgotten that the U.S. intelligence community, under then Director of Central Intelligence, R. James Woolsey, testified to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on January 25, 1994, that North Korea then had enough plutonium for at least one nuclear weapon, and already had the bomb. So today, the Obama administration and the press expects us to believe that North Korea has still not figured out how to make a nuclear warhead for missile delivery, after nearly 20 years of trying.

Clinton administration mythology has it, largely accepted by a compliant press, that President Clinton's Agreed Framework initiative slowed or stopped North Korea's nuclear weapon program until an overly aggressive Bush administration provoked North Korea to resume warhead development with its first nuclear test in 2006.

This is nonsense.

I served on the congressional North Korea Advisory Group during the Clinton administration. We warned the White House, the press, anyone who would listen, that North Korea was cheating on the Agreed Framework. During the Clinton years, North Korea forged full speed ahead on its nuclear weapons program--including with a clandestine uranium centrifuge program, to supplement the known plutonium program for North Korea's advancing nuclear arsenal.

Does anybody think this nutjob would be issuing these threats if Bush were still in charge?

They know we have a wimp in charge who will do NOTHING.

The Pueblo should have been destroyed the day after it was taken.
North Korea should have been destroyed the day after the Pueblo was taken.

An EMP warhead fired from a container ship off our coasts will do lots of damage. No way to stop it as there are loads of ships out there and there is no missile defense shield in place. They also don’t need any fancy targeting systems or a big rocket. Just aim it in our general direction and that’s all she wrote.

King Fatboy was looking at a cruise ship in one of these posts so maybe that there plan.

The article provided some interesting information about nuclear devices and EMP weapons, most of which I was previously unaware.

It would seem to me that any super EMP weapon developed and used by NK would have the full backing and support of other nations like China and Russia. Using NK as a proxy would serve their interests in reducing/eliminating US power without getting their hands dirty.

The North Korean elites might willingly sacrifice half of their population in a war of their choosing, since almost half of population of North Korea is in the military.

Videos of their military parades show a hoard of malnourished, brainwashed, young (and old) conscripts.

This chart, which shows military strenght comparisons to the US and other nations is troubling.

NK is like the crazy bum who gets agitated when you say “No”. The bum yells and threatens to cut your throat, and you ignore him, because he never has acted on it.

O/T, but I get approached by bums at my grocery store parking lot. Nothing says "No" like a large bore muzzle. They only get to see that when they threaten to cut my throat.

Yes it would suck. They don’t even have to hit a target to cause grief.

If the idiots that are feeding NK would cut off the food supply then NK would shrink in size. Attrition is effective.

In my gut I believe he is just doing what his dad did: Threaten to kill us until we give him more money. He’s just not very good at it yet.

The list of idiots would include the USA, Japan, South Korea and India to name a few. We used to airlift bags of rice into NK. They would refuse any rice that had packaging from South Korea or Japan. The rice had to be re-bagged in Indian bags.

Yes it is. What’s deadlier for the artillery is when it’s located by a weapons system that quickly locates it and sends a missile to destroy it within a matter of minutes. A very few minutes. The Iraqis found this out real quick in Desert Storm.
