Our La Plata (town of approx. 8700 located on the southern tip of Maryland) was originally founded in the 1870's and incorporated on April 4, 1888.
(I don't live in La Plata though)

Trivia: a F4 or F5 tornado hit in April 2002, which cut across the county as if slicing it in half.
