~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina

Shaw Air Force Base is the home of the United States Air Force 20th Fighter Wing (20 FW). It is also home to Headquarters, Ninth Air Force (9 AF) and Headquarters, United States Central Command Air Forces (USCENTAF). The mission of the 20 FW is to provide, project, and sustain combat-ready air forces. It is the Air Force's largest combat F-16 wing.

Today's 20th Fighter Wing can trace its lineage to 28 July 1947, when the 20th Fighter Wing, began at Shaw Field, South Carolina, as a Ninth Air Force unit. Components of the new fighter wing included the 20th Maintenance and Supply Group, the 20th Airdrome Group, and the 20th Station Medical Group (later Tactical Hospital).

 The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a compact, multi-role fighter aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the United States and allied nations.

The Fighting Falcon is a dogfighter with numerous innovations including a frameless, bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while under high g-forces, and reclined seat to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot.

It was also the first fighter aircraft deliberately built to sustain 9-g turns. It has a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one, providing enough power to climb and accelerate vertically – if necessary.

To: Kathy in Alaska; All

Have a safe trip home, glad you sister is here for a few days. Enjoy your visit! Thoughts and prayers continue for you and your family dear one.

Two more big shows in the next 30 days, then a good 6 month vacation east to see the wee ones. Family is growing again, baby #5 is on the way too. Two babies this Fall, and I cannot miss that!

And, our TC shoot comes up the first of June, and that will be a blast (literally)!

Hope to get some FReeper visits in while I am on the extended trip east, some folks I have not seen in a few years, and need to hook up for a good chat.

I am so ready to hit the road!

Y’all have a great week.

Love ya MA!

Shaw AFB was the last remote CONUS ( Contenetal United States ) tour until the early 70s.

IDK if it's still there, but back in the 80s they had a B-66 ( the same plane from the movie “BAT 21” ) on static display in front of the entrance to Shaw. It only flew once. On it's first flight, the pilot tried a roll in it. Plane wasn't designed for that. Strained most every fastener and warped the airframe so bad that it never flew again. Was said that the pilot ended up in Leavenworth Federal prison. That roll was forbidden by regs.

Trousers pressed. I don't wear regular shoes anymore - I wear black athletic shoes. I'll probably wear my Single Malt Scotch tie.

We're back in the lower 40's on our way to 30.

Your official welcome....we have a new thread each day.
The ping is around 5p Alaska time (9p Eastern) Monday thru Friday evenings
...and around 4pm Alaska time (8p Eastern) on Saturday and Sunday.

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

Welcome to the Canteen, laplata, where we honor our troops, our veterans, their families, and our allies every day. We are here 24(mostly)/7/365 to provide a place for our military to stop in, pull up a chair, enjoy a joke, hear a song (requests taken), read some history, enjoy a cyber meal (no calories), hear about our families lives, join in the silliness, and just relax.

All who honor our troops, veterans, their families, and our allies are welcome to join in the every day honoring. We have serving troops, veterans, family members, allies, and those who just wish to help honor them here every day.

Politics is kept to a bare minimum, as there are plenty of threads on FR to choose from, and we are family friendly.

THE SOLDIER

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

As of last year, the B-66 in my story is still in front of Shaw AFB.

About 1981 we got the call at Plattburgh AFB, NY that one of our FB-111A bombers had an IFE ( In Flight Emergency ) due to an engine failure and had to land at Shaw. Had to have a large group of maintenance personnel from our base to go there. My parents came up for a visit so I was happy for that. Did our weapons thing which wasn't much and helped with an engine change. Once we were done the pilot had to do some maneuvers to test the plane out. He did a low level full swept wing near supersonic pass over Shaw's runway which was way cool as they never did it at our base.

Now getting to what I think is the funny part. FB-111s leaked oil and hydraulic fluid worse than any other plane in the USAF at the time. We used every precaution to prevent fluid spills, large metal drip pans, and plenty of speedy dry. Cleaned up as best we could. Our plane left and we packed it in to return to NY. When our C-130 left we noticed from the air a large brown stain that could be well seen on the huge field of white which never had a plane on it before. It seems that all of the concrete was new as Shaw was only weeks away from getting it's first F-16s.
