NK cannot defeat either of those nations - even without US helping them.

Agreed, they have about as much chance of defeating anyone militarily as Belize has of overrunning the USA. Pretty much everyone I know who has served in South Korea says that they rank right up there with us in capabilities.

Yesterday my cousin said that putting NK up against SK is about the same as putting your post office up against the NAVY SEALS.

The Bill Gertz article points out that China is sending conflicting signals by, for example, cutting oil transfers to the Norks but reiterating their decision to defend them.
He points out that China fears mass refugees on the same level as a Norks’ war with the ROKs.

North Korea could reduce Seoul to a smoking wreck with their artillery. North Korea has a very large standing army, and even if their military is too outdated to match the south, they always have those nuclear weapons. They may not be able to hit Austin, but they sure as hell can hit South Korea.

Only two F-22s? That’s not a show of force. That’s more like a green light to the pudgy Nork.

Well it is, after all, only an armistice.

Without nukes, they pretty much beat the south the first time before we stepped in.

I think the best case scenario is China takes Chia pet out and installs someone more stable in his place.

China and South Korea both fear one thing above all others, millions of Nork refugees screaming across their borders.

They were a lot less hungry back then, and in terms of weapons, were evenly matched with the southerners for the most part.
I agree however, we should be cautious of underestimating the Norks. They have nuclear weapons, and while logic would dictate only the lunatics in the Muslim world would detonate nuclear weapons today because of MAD, the North Korean state is very fanatical, and are just the sort of people who when losing, would take everyone with them.

Yep. Not great but a whole lot better than all the other options. A few years ago I remember seeing an expose on North Korean illegal immigrants in China. In the show they had a disguised Chinese border guard crying over the treatment the North Koreans gave to escapees when china handed them back over. He said the Norks ran a steel hook on a chain right through the hands of the returned prisoners and led them away.

I thought Hitler bombed Pearl Harbor.

That's what Senator Blutarsky told me.

Just the thought of the CIC we have in there now is scary.

I don’t have much faith in the Joint Chief’s of Staff, either.

He’s purged out the good ones and replaced them with a bunch of politician/yes men.

I suspect they are just looking to make sure the mess in Korea doesn’t spill over the border into China. I doubt they will back the Norks if they initiate hostilities. China likes North Korea as a thorn in the U.S. side. If North Korea does an East Germany, it takes one of their pieces off the board and places a new one on our side.

If we did, we are idiots.

The best thing to do with this little putz is to ignore him.

Some LtJG is going to get spooked and fire on a Nork, or from the north.

What the hell are we doing?

"....they pretty much beat the south the first time ..."

The first time the north was industrialized and the south was agrarian, That is not the case now.

Unfortunately for the remaining free world, there really aren’t any nations today in the same geopolitical situation the US held in the late 30’s compared to the other world powers. When it does hit, I don’t see anybody able to come bail out the rest of the free world.

Except maybe Israel,...as a force multiplier.

After 9/11, I said pretty much the same thing you did - the only way to deal with an asymetrical opponent is to use an equally asymetrical response.

You wipe out a complex of buildings in NYC, we make your entire country unlivable for 50 years or so.

And yes, you do drones first and then you mop up after the anti-aircraft and artillery is disabled.

Let the world then debate the wisdom of a nuclear response to asymetrical warfare. At least there would be a world left to consider it, and one in which nobody had the shadow of a doubt that the US would use its arsenal.

By far, this point, and this ONLY point is the one that broke the USSR - they were CONVINCED Reagan would use nukes on the Soviets in a first strike.
