As Views Shift on Guns, Reid Corrals Senate
NY Times ^ | March 31, 2013 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

It was, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada ebulliently proclaimed, a “happy day for me” as he stood with Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association, in 2010 at a new shooting range in Las Vegas made possible by federal money secured by Mr. Reid. “People who criticize this probably would criticize baseball,” Mr. Reid said before firing off a few rounds.

These days, Mr. Reid, the Senate majority leader, is far more likely to meet with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, an outspoken advocate of stricter gun control, than with Mr. LaPierre as he prepares to bring the most expansive package of gun safety legislation in a decade to the Senate floor over the next few weeks.

Mr. Reid’s evolution from a proponent of gun rights to the shepherd of legislation that would expand background checks, among other gun control measures, emerges from a complex web of political calculations that have come to define his leadership style over the last decade.

How tenacious Mr. Reid is willing to be — and whether he will extract votes one by one as he has for other big pieces of legislation — may well determine the fate of the measures.

Mr. Reid declined to be interviewed but answered questions...

Mr. Reid, aides said, is also motivated by both the personal angst he felt over the killing of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., last year, as well as the anger he feels toward the N.R.A., which was widely expected to endorse him in his 2010 re-election campaign but then declined to do so.

--snip--

This conflict came to the fore during discussions of changing the filibuster rules; Mr. Reid ultimately chose an approach that placed fewer limitations on a minority party’s ability to filibuster than the newer members wanted...

Meanwhile the CO2 emissions from las vegas are the greatest per square foot of deleterious, superfluous energy waste.

Any specific polls? I along with many of my friends in the say 20-30y/o range are much more pro-2a than I thought. If not outright pro-2a, the rest are not anti gun like Cuomo, Bloomberg, etc. and have asked intelligent questions about firearms.

After Sandy Hook one in particular, who attends a community college in a city with a history of violent crimes, gang violence and shootings realized the campus police force was UNARMED. They asked why and never got a good answer, except that city cops know that in the event they were called to a active shooter incident.

Yes, the pre 1994 ones I have were lost in the Mail for the past twenty years and mysteriously showed up last week.

I guess they found them where that Postal Worker buried them in his backyard with the rest of his deliveries.

What are the odds?

Any specific polls?

Poll: Americans, Especially Young Ones, Say People "Should Be Allowed" to Own Assault Weapons

Rats didn't make a peep about gun grabbing for years until Newtown. That was part of the plan to take Congress in 2006. They didn't recruit from their moonbat wing. They ran bluedogs, etc.

Did you see the polls today that said “most people want a gun ban?” It was on the MSN home page.

A poll can be made to say what ever youb want it to.

I used to support saf until I discovered that only about 3% of the funds they gather to "help the cause" actually makes it to the cause while the other 97% goes to salaries and staff expenses.

You’re very confused.

I live in Indiana and have heard this Bloomberg financed commercial dozens of times.

The idiot announcer is TELLING YOU TO CALL Sen Dan Coats and support gun legislation.
