White House to furlough 480 staffers By Amie Parnes - 04/01/13 02:44 PM ET

The White House announced Monday that 480 staffers who work at the Office of Management and Budget have received furlough notices requiring that they take unpaid days off due to the sequester.

White House press secretary Jay Carney made the announcement during a White House briefing on Monday, but he would not get into details about whether other members of the White House staff, including those who work closest to President Obama in the West Wing, received any notices.

Carney told reporters that other notices could go out if Congress can't iron out a deal on the budget.

“As the impact of the sequester progresses, furlough and pay cuts remain possibilities – or additional furloughs as well as pay cuts remain possibilities for additional White House employees,” he said.

Carney told reporters that the White House hasn't been hiring as many people and has also been delaying filling open positions.

The White House has also “significantly scaled back” buying equipment and has “curtailed” staff travel, as well as the use of Internet air cards.

The White House is also reviewing contracts to determine if it's able to “reduce costs and improve efficiencies” without undermining its core mission, Carney said.

What, no furlough notifications to one of the three White House calligraphers? Or at the very least, consolidating such lettering with the Department of State?

Seriously, just fire the lot of the OMB. When was the last time that the White House produced a budget that received more than 10 votes in the Senate? Seems like everyone there is redundant.

They should start by cutting Chewbacca’s “staff.”

Does anyone actually think the Budget will be Managed less effectively with fewer people spending fewer hours in the Office?

The problem with today's liberals is that the only way to tell them apart from parody is that parody cannot go too far over the top. As soon as I saw the title, my first guess was April Fools - for the White House to cut spending by furloughing staffers is entirely too sensible to be real. Then I saw the numbers. No sane person would suggest that there are 480 staffers who work at the OMB; that's too exaggerated to be funny and makes for a weak parody. That's why I assume this is real.

If we're wondering why we run trillion dollar deficits year after year, it's because of bloated organizations like OMB, bloated entitlements including Social Security disability, and frivolous research. I hope the OMB and all other federal agencies will cut back to the staffing levels of Clinton's last year. That would still be far too big, but it would be a nice start.

Re: furloughing Office of Management and Budget staffers

This is the group that dares to point out how out-of-whack spending is. Of course, they will be furloughed! Reduces the Won’s bad press, you know.

Meaningless. This isn’t a furlough. Having people take their vacation time still results in paying out the same amount of money. It doesn’t reduce anything. More Smoke and mirrors.
