Individuals 55 and older would lose their right to keep and bear arms under a provision thats expected to be included as part of a comprehensive United Nations Global Arms Trade Treaty.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke about the impetus behind the controversial measure at press conference over the weekend in New York City, the site of the final negotiations between the 193 Member States.
Regulating the international transfers of both weapons and ammunition is a key component of a robust arms trade treaty, as is limiting civilian access to small arms and munitions, said Ban Ki-moon.
Theres an emerging consensus that certain groups should be restricted from possessing conventional arms, certainly those who fuel conflict, arm criminals or violations of international humanitarian or human rights law are at the top of the list, Ban Ki-moon continued.
But also, the international community believes segments of the population that present a danger to themselves and others, chiefly individuals deemed or adjudicated mentally defective and persons with attenuating cerebral faculties, should be added to that list.
Simply put, the UN believes guns dont belong in the hands of the elderly, said H. Michael Chase, an attorney for the human rights watchdog group.
Pools of research show that a significant majority of gun-related suicides, accidental shootings, non-fatal negligent discharges are perpetrated by persons 55 and over, Chase said.
Along with the mentally ill, preventing those who are advancing in age from gaining easy access to firearms is a common sense way to save lives, concluded Chase.
Dr. Michael Betti from the John Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness embraced the UNs call to disarm senior citizens.

For me the answer is: No way in Hell, Molon Labe!!
April Fools, right?
lol, ya won’t have to worry about it after Obamacare really kicks in. The number of old people will decrease quickly.
Any time a gun grabber starts babbling about “common sense” you can be reasonably assured it makes no sense common or otherwise. I’ve read the 2nd Amendment a few times and it doesn’t mention age. They can have my guns when I run out of ammo.
The older I get, the less I have to lose. At 20 I may hesitate to go against an oppressive government, at 60 I may not.
The UN are fools every day.
So they want to disarm the unindoctrinated.
If that boat just had not sunk.
“April Fools, right?”
No more shotguns for Plugs.
You can still beat them with the iron bar.
Disarm those over 55 but allow gang members, illegals and other criminals to keep their guns.
The world has gone insane!
I have a better idea. Drag everyone out of the UN building by their hair to a place of execution, demolish the building, and scatter the organization to the four winds.
Why? Why are we limiting civilian access to small arms?
Then salt the earth.
If I were dictator for a day, I’d evict the UN from every square inch of United States territory and pull the US out of that evil organization.
I ain’t buying it. There is only TWO mentions of it on the web: Here, and the source article. It’s an APR1 deal.
I can’t stand this today!
Everybody is trying to out do the last one.
I think I’ll avoid reading FR today.
