Murder "cannot be eliminated": Inquest hears Boris Berezovsky was found with ligature ...

Murder was not ruled out today after an inquest heard that exiled Russian Boris Berezovsky was found lying in his bathroom with a ligature around his neck.

A piece of the same material around his throat was tied on to the shower rail above him, indicating he apparently hanged from the rail.

But police told a coroner they still cannot rule out murder.

Det Insp Mark Bissell said: “The results of the postmortem found that the cause of death was consistent with hanging.

"The pathologist has found nothing to indicate a sign of struggle or third party involvement.”

He added toxicology results were yet to come.

But, asked by Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford if he was able to rule out third party involvement, Mr Bissell said he could not. ...

In my opinion, this is a suspicious death.

Yeah. Suspicious. What in the Sam hill is a ‘ligature’?

I had to look it up. A cord? Why not just say that? A curtain cord? A brass fixture that held marble blocks together in ancient Greece?
Those wacky English ... they act like they invented the language, showing off all the time with these five dollar words. Can’t bring themselves to say ‘cookies’: it’s ‘biscuits.’ ‘Ketchup’: ‘tomato sauce.’ La de da!

OK, now I forgot what the article is about. Some Rooskie stiff?
But not a bad rant, hmm?

He sure must have had a very sturdy shower bar to hold all of that dead weight.

Yes, he was strangled with a cord (or scarf according to some accounts) and it sounds like murder to me. Usually, if you are hanged, you are found hanging, not lying on the floor.

This is obviously a case of autoerotic asphyxiation.

it sounds like murder to me. Usually, if you are hanged, you are found hanging, not lying on the floor.

If a VIP is hanged then he stays hanged. Any assassin can carry a few feet of sturdy synthetic rope, or know where one can be obtained. On the other hand, a suicidal man can hang himself on a weak support, with a flimsy rope - and fall on the floor, dead, after the support, or the rope, fails.

It is reported that he was found inside a locked bathroom. Most bathroom locks do not have a key and cannot be locked from the outside. That particular door was broken by the security guard; he wouldn't have to do that if he had a key. Such a lock does not permit an assassin to exit the bathroom and lock the door behind him. Therefore, nobody exited the bathroom.

It is far more realistic to conclude that Berezovsky was destroyed financially, politically and morally - because all that has actually happened and was in the news for everyone to see. He lost a major lawsuit and owed hundreds of millions. He lost his house in London and was living in a faraway house of his ex-wife. He lost all his entourage; he had only one guard (more like an assistant) left by the day he died. Suicide is likely because he had no way to get out of this situation. He even spoke of suicide with some of his friends.

The detective may be unwilling to deny a possibility of murder, but I think that's just because the police is not in a hurry to commit to this or that scenario. Why should they? Who benefits from a speedy conclusion? Nobody. So the police will do it all by the book, with all proper lab tests and with whatever else they are supposed to do.

Did the bathroom have a window? How many floors was it above the ground? What about the death of the high profile French lawyer also reported here at FR?

The continuation of the article says there was no suicide note, and it happened in his $20 million mansion. How much did he owe on the mansion? Was he broke or not?

I’m sorry, but I feel no sympathy for Boris Berezovsky. Likewise, if Mark Rich and George Soros, and a few other international crooks turned up dead.

The house was not his; it belonged to his first (?) wife. She lived nearby and showed up at the house almost instantly after the alarm was raised.

Was he broke or not?

He was quite broke. The reporter quotes: "Another source characterized Berezovsky's finances as "an immediate liquidity squeeze, but long-term, he had assets." I don't know how to interpret that - and nobody knows, until his finances are audited. One would get into a similar squeeze if he invests into EVs, or solar panels, or wind turbines... you'd own a lot of stuff, all unprofitable and unsellable. On the books you'd be rich, until you try to sell.

He borrowed large sums of money (hundreds of millions) before the trial. He expected to win, IIRC, six billion dollars. He won nothing, and he was described by a judge as a liar. That closed his credit lines pretty fast, and all he had left was debts.

Some of his money problems were caused by his wives - who he divorced and, as a settlement, paid them much of that money that he borrowed. But wives were not the only issue here. Back in 2000's he reportedly financed a good deal of Chechen jihad against Russia, trying to unseat Putin and be able to return to Russia.

“He sure must have had a very sturdy shower bar to hold all of that dead weight.”

EXACTLY!

Other than 3/4” galvanized water pipe set into the concrete walls is some homes in Africa, I’ve never seen a shower curtain rod that would hold more than 25 lbs or so.

Most bathroom locks do not have a key and cannot be locked from the outside

Many of these 'privacy' lock sets can be locked upon exiting the room by simply pushing a button or turning a knob (depending on the lock-set) to 'lock' on the inside and pulling the door shut when exiting.

A “bad Rant?” No, no, it is really a very nice rant. It definitely meets the standards that are expected on Free Republic. But to “throw the cat among the pigeons,” you must add a paragraph based upon your own experiences and another paragragh that would clearly show that you did not read the whole article. I think that with a little work, you have the makings of rant that we can all admire and refer to in future postings.

I +was thinking the same thing; usually they’re hollow metal 1” OD tubes and simply screwed-into the walls, just to hold-up the shower curtain. As rich as he was, it was probably gold and embedded into wall-mounted fixtures. Who knows?

What a cool sounding word. Poetic even.
