The body of Olivier Metzner, who defended Noriega against money laundering charges in France, was found on Sunday floating off a Breton island he owned.
Other celebrity clients of 63-year-old star of the French bar included the "rogue trader" Jérôme Kerviel and Continental Airlines, accused of causing the catastrophic Concorde crash in 2000.
In other high-profile cases, he represented the former prime minister Dominique de Villepin in the Clearstream scandal, rock star Bertrand Cantat in the murder trial of his actress girlfriend, and Françoise Bettencourt-Meyers, the daughter of the L'Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, in her bid to have her mother declared a ward of court.
In a note sent by his eldest daughter, Noriega said he was "surprised" and "deeply hurt" to learn of Mr Metzner's death.
He also categorically rejected suggestions of suicide, saying the act was "incompatible with (Metzner's) personality."
