MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered surprise military exercises in the Black Sea region involving 7,000 troops and dozens of ships to test the army's battle readiness, the Kremlin said.

In typical Putin style, the order was presented to the Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in a sealed envelope in the middle of the night at 4:00 am (2400 GMT), with the drills to start immediately.

...

Peskov said 36 ships from the Russian Black Sea Fleet's base in the Ukrainian Crimean city of Sevastopol and the Russian port of Novorossiisk would be involved in the exercises.

Aviation, paratroopers and special forces would also take part, Peskov said.

"According to international practice, exercises involving up to 7,000 people do not require us to inform our partners in advance," he said.

The defence ministry's chief spokesman Igor Konashenkov told RIA Novosti that the drills would involve 7,000 troops, up to 20 military jets and helicopters and 50 pieces of artillery.

Someone urinated in his corn flakes. Apparently there was a big scene in South Africa where Putin was meeting with the BRICS. The SA security wanted to scan the Russian nuclear suitcases that are always near Putin. The Russians refused to have the suitcases scanned and the SA guards refused to let the suitcases into the building. So Putin was without the launch codes for a brief amount of time.

I’m surprised they have sufficient stocks of Number 6 fuel to fire up.

It’s too early to be doing security drills for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Hey Putin, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC .... don’t go there, man. Please don’t make our fearless leader cry.

And Putin, you better not think for a second that even though Obama is usually out of town on vacation, that he will leave Americans behind—Remember Benghazi!!!

Sorry, I like PootyPoot.

Same age as me, smart guy. Cold warrior here, I know who he is and what he is.

The world is upside down now. Who would have guessed that Russia would have a monopoly on morality?

His position on queers and mudslimz is primo.

FLAME ON!

Yeah the Russian stuff may not work, but who the heck in their right mind would put a nuclear football through an X-Ray scanner ? What if the idiots set off the codes somehow with the X-Rays ?

Perhaps they need to modify the warranty label on the X-Ray scanner. Warranty void if user tries to X-Ray the Russian Nuclear Football.

Sorry, I like PootyPoot.

I won't say that I like Putin, but I do respect him.

It is possible that radical islam will eventually destroy Western civilization. If that happens, one reason for it will be that the US and Russia never entered into a strategic partnership.

When a US official meets with the Russians, it's often the same thing. We treat them like they are somewhat stupid, mischievous children.

It's easy to like Putin. He has a persona of being strong and decisive. He gets things done and he seems to always win. By comparison our leaders look weak and vacillating. They pander while he produces.

This is how democracies become dictatorships. Putin is a thief, a murderer and an autocrat. He jails political opponents and kills reporters who investigate him. It's dangerous to admire such men.

I do not put much credence in this. Saw the Black Sea Fleet a couple of years ago in Sevastopol. It was in very rough shape with most of their larger units laid up.

There hasn't been the money to keep it up to par.

Too, lest we forget, the fleet has to sail through the Bosphorus to get to the Med. This has been a problem for Russia since the 1700's.

I guess the real question is who are they trying to intimidate. Is this for domestic consumption or for Obama's? Who should this worry: Ukraine, Georgia, Syria, Turkey? It could be he's intentionally ruffling some feathers in his military ranks.
