Obama administration moves ahead with sweeping rules requiring cleaner gasoline

The Environmental Protection Agency will move ahead Friday with rules requiring cleaner gasoline and cars nationwide, despite fierce protests from the oil industry and some conservative Democrats, according to several individuals briefed on the matter.

The proposed rules — which had been stuck in regulatory limbo since December 2011 in the face of intense political opposition — would cut the amount of sulfur in U.S. gasoline by two-thirds and impose fleetwide pollution limits on new vehicles by 2017.

The regulation enjoys support from auto companies, state regulators, environmental groups and equipment manufacturers. But oil industry officials and their congressional allies argue the proposed standards would raise gasoline prices and could result in greater carbon dioxide emissions because they will spur additional refining activity.

Opponents estimate the standards would force refiners to spend $10 billion to upgrade their facilities and an additional $2.4 billion in annual operating costs, adding 6 to 9 cents to the cost of a gallon of gas. Public health advocates say the ultimate cost would amount to less than a penny per gallon because of provisions giving refiners flexibility in complying with the standards.

Keep going on with imposing stricter standards. The price of a car is already out of what most people can afford. Put everything on hiatus, develop real solutions to real problems obtain limited unemployment than think about stricter standards. But DC use their brain come now lets be realistic!

They could refine it down to water and they still wouldn't be satisfied.

The ultimate goal of a dictator is to wave his wand and just point it at a human being and henchmen will kill that one in the manner so desired by the dictator.

Barry and Eric want to get all Whiteys out of personal vehicles and onto "public transportation" where the Knockout King crowd can have fun with them before they kill them and take their stuff.

That's a lot more fun than just having Ubama take stuff and give it to them.

It has nothing to do with emissions, and everything to do with control. The goal of obama and his minions is nationalization of the oil industry, and the entire energy sector in the US. The goal is to reduce the private companies down to small enough number that the feds can easily take over, for the common good of course. Mergers and aquisitions help condense entire industries down to a few owners, which make them big fat targets for government takeover.

The more the government legislates against a paticular industry, means that they want that industry under their complete control, for the common good of course. In other words, fascism.

The price of gas will of course climb to new all time highs. The MoRons who voted for this SOB will scream the loudest, but the dims will blame it on Big Oil and the idiot GOP will let them get away with it.

I never would've guessed that in a so-called Republic a handful of people could get away with destroying The Country while everyone stood by and watched.

The price of a car is already out of what most people can afford.

Of course progressives realize that overtly banning private autos would never fly in the US. So year by year they are pricing them out of reach of anyone but the elites. 20 yrs from now the segment of the public with personal vehicles will be a fraction of current numbers.

The Environmental Protection Agency will move ahead Friday with rules requiring cleaner gasoline and cars nationwide, despite fierce protests from the oil industry

The last time EPA mandated "cleaner gasoline," we got an environmental disaster with MTBE in polluted groundwater. The oil industry had lobbied for the additive (quietly) as a competing product with the ethanol ADM was pushing. They knew at the time of the potential for MTBE to leak into soil and migrate long distances because it had already happened in Rahway, NJ in 1987. Accordingly, the Clean Air Act of 1990 (signed by 'the environmental president' GHWB) indemnified the oil companies for the oxygenate additive. In private meetings at the EPA, big oil's toady "green group" the NRDC had agreed to the deal (the NRDC lawyer present was David Donniger), and then the industry issued 'protests' prior to the adoption of the rule for public consumption.

Hence, you can't tell from reports like this what the hell may be going on in reality.
