An immigrant’s personal view of gun control
The Olean Times Herald ^ | March 25, 2013 | Kate Day Sager

When Henk Merison spoke of growing up in Holland when it was under the control of the Nazis, the memories brought a look of fear to the 81-year-old’s eyes.

Mr. Merison and his wife, Corrie, both natives of Holland and longtime residents of Belfast in Allegany County, recently sat down with me to speak about their home country and memories from World War II. Mr. Merison’s reasons for sharing his story are due to his fear with the current gun control laws in the state, and parallels he believes exist with gun registration and confiscation in Holland more than 70 years ago.

“As George Santayana said ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,’” he said of the famous philosopher.

As a member of the national and local Tea Party, Mr. Merison said he believes the state and national governments are altering the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which essentially protects the right to keep and bear arms.

The senseless and horrible murder of 20 schoolchildren and six educators in Newtown, Conn., in December by a mentally ill gunman brandishing a semiautomatic weapon with a high-capacity magazine served as a catalyst for much of the current gun-control legislation. In New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was the first governor in the nation to respond by proposing new gun control laws.........

“It is the right and duty of the citizen to be at all times armed”

Good enough for the Founders is good enough for me.

Indians and wild beasts then - Urban Ferals infesting the ‘Concrete Jungle” now.

And,thanks to enviro-socialist based wildlife programs, wild beasts in our natural jungle.

A thank you to President Bush for signing the law allowing guns in national parks. Once again, we can walk in the woods without being stripped of our Second Amendment Rights by the Armed & Rangerous.

I “super carry” - I carry around the house, everywhere... I have a weapon on my person or within arms reach at all times.

An “ex” was a NRA counselor, a combat competition winner, and was of the opinion that at all times, I should be able to be on target within five seconds, assuming that I had laid my gun down.

She also was of the opinion that bathroom activities and even sleeping were included in the 5 second rule.

All other times, one carried.

She was quite a wise female, though hardly Latina.

Well, if the Everglades is any indication, the real danger in the woods is now wearing a uniform over body armor, carrying a rifle with a selective fire switch, and busy being officious, armed, and rangerous.

I have often wondered what the Indians would have thought of today’s commies. Any ideas?

When Henk Merison spoke of growing up in Holland when it was under the control of the Nazis, the memories brought a look of fear to the 81-year-old’s eyes.

This tract in the Southern Tier of New York is my home country -- born in Olean, lived many years in Allegany County -- divorced from County Court in Belmont, and won custody of my children there.

In the adjoining counties, Steuben, Allegany, and Cattaraugus I learned the meaning of arms-bought liberty, continued by proper use of both. But the quote above, purported to be Santayana's, was originated by the Irish-born Anglican Edmund Burke (1729-1797), worthy of closer examination; a contemporary , co-religionist, and supporter of George Washington; and IMHO a greater man than the one who claimed that they were in those "... times that try men's souls ..." (Thomas Paine).

------------

A few of Burke's quotes:

Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil
is for good men to do nothing.

When bad men combine, the good must associate;
else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice
in a contemptible struggle.

But what is liberty without wisdom, and without virtue?
It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is
folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint.

-------------

Let us be like-minded, now; and persuade others as did Burke.

'Scuse me. Likemindedness is known only by action. Like love, faith, devotion, consistency, liberty, ... conservatism, ... etc. Capisce?

Let's not forget that the Urban Ferals have the same constitutional rights as we do. "Shall not be infringed" has to apply to all, or it applies to none.

The old time Indians would have done what modern conservatives should do. Fight and not take this current culture that is being imposed on us.
