The Navy’s newest ship will be the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement at a Pentagon ceremony today, calling Giffords someone whose name is synonymous with courage.
Former Rep. Gabby Giffords looked on at the Pentagon as Mabus made the announcement in a public ceremony. Also in attendance at this afternoon’s brief ceremony in the Pentagon Courtyard was Roxana Green, the mother of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.
Christina-Taylor was among those killed in last year’s deadly shooting rampage in Tucson that targeted Giffords as she met constituents outside a supermarket. Roxana Green will be the ship’s sponsor.
Giffords is still recovering from the gunshot wounds to her head that she suffered during last January’s shooting incident. She stepped down from Congress two weeks ago.
The ship named today for her, which has yet to be built, will be the Navy’s 10th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a new kind of ship designed to bring the Navy fighting power into shallow coastal areas. The first two ships in this class were called Freedom and Independence, but the conventional practice since then has been to name the other ships in the class after a city.
“It’s very appropriate that LCS 10 be named for someone who has become synonymous with courage, who has inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit,” said Mabus.
Mabus said the notion occurred to him that this would be a “fitting tribute” not only to Giffords but to Navy families because she was a Navy spouse. Her husband, Mark Kelly, was until recently an astronaut and Navy pilot.

I would rather she not have been shot, but I think naming a military ship after her is not appropriate. Also rather hypocritical given a military ship has massive guns and other weapons of destruction.

Well it’s getting rarer these days. “In The Navy” is the new anthem there.

These ships are a joke, as is naming one after Giffords when there are so many more Sailors who are far more deserving. But as to the ships, they carry the firepower of a Bradley fighting vehicle. A 30mm gun, and Griffin missiles with a 3.5 mile range and a 13 pound warhead. Thats it.
A 1939 era Fletcher Class destroyer had a 12.5 foot draft and would already hopelessly slaughter a Littoral “combat” ship. An Updated Fletcher would make it an embarrasment.
As a point of fact, a Litoral “combat” ship really shouldnt go near the shore becase a T-72 tank could easily take one out.
As a final comment, the LCS was exempted from numerous USN battle damage survivability norms that have stood the test of time.
Within 2 years we will have a ship named the USS Rainbow Pride. If this country survives 2 more years. Prepare yourselves.
What I want to know is will this ship be allowed to have automatic weapons?
Six (6) people were killed that day. I wonder how many people remember their names, what they did, who their family members were, anything about them??? Yes she was injured but she is alive.
So the Navy considers Giffords being injured is more important than those six lost lives.

Ships should be named after famous naval battles or brave sailors, not some mutt that had the bad luck to be shoot at a strip mall and has become the poster retard for gun control.

I’m sorry this woman got shot, by a nutjob who should have been in an asylum, but we don’t name vessels after random gunshot victims. Why is her name any more important than the people who actually died on that day? Because she’s a politician? I think the woman whose baby was just shot in the face is a brave soul, to be able to go on after something like that, but she won’t have a ship named after her.

My grandfather (my greatest hero), spent 20 years in the United States Navy... he must be rolling over in his grave to see what Obama the his libs have done to his Navy. I miss him dearly, but I am glad that he has not had to watch what has happened to our country.... it would have broken his heart.
I’m sure all the sailors on this ship will be armed with perfume and the weapon systems will be replaced with flower gardens.
