Navy Announces USS Gabrielle Giffords

The Navy’s newest ship will be the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement at a Pentagon ceremony today, calling Giffords someone whose name is synonymous with courage.

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords looked on at the Pentagon as Mabus made the announcement in a public ceremony. Also in attendance at this afternoon’s brief ceremony in the Pentagon Courtyard was Roxana Green, the mother of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.

Christina-Taylor was among those killed in last year’s deadly shooting rampage in Tucson that targeted Giffords as she met constituents outside a supermarket. Roxana Green will be the ship’s sponsor.

Giffords is still recovering from the gunshot wounds to her head that she suffered during last January’s shooting incident. She stepped down from Congress two weeks ago.

The ship named today for her, which has yet to be built, will be the Navy’s 10th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a new kind of ship designed to bring the Navy fighting power into shallow coastal areas. The first two ships in this class were called Freedom and Independence, but the conventional practice since then has been to name the other ships in the class after a city.

“It’s very appropriate that LCS 10 be named for someone who has become synonymous with courage, who has inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit,” said Mabus.

Mabus said the notion occurred to him that this would be a “fitting tribute” not only to Giffords but to Navy families because she was a Navy spouse. Her husband, Mark Kelly, was until recently an astronaut and Navy pilot.

She is being rewarded for bravely stopping a bullet with her head that would have surely damaged the blacktop in the parking lot.

I thought to get a ship named after you, the person named had to be dead. The only previous exception to the rule was ADM Arleigh Burke, the name sake of the USS BURKE (DDG-51) and lead ship of the class. ADM Burke was a dynamic leader as CNO and is the only Chief of Naval Operations to complete six years of a normal four year term in this post.

What exactly did Gabby Giffords do, other than get shot by a lunatic, while in office. She's still alive and causing trouble for Americans. SecNav Ray Mabus is a total ass.

I would Christen that LCS Victoria Soto. She was that teacher in Newton CT last December. She threw her body over her children to protect them, an act of conspicuous gallantry for which she sacrificed her life. That’s heroism.

I was hoping this was satire.

What the hell is wrong with the USN? They name one after Cesar Chavez, another after John Murtha, and now they name one after Giffords? Funny, I haven’t heard of them planning to name a ship after Sgt. Dakota Meyer, USMC, who received the MoH for saving 36 lives.

Its is getting to the point that I am almost going to cheer for the PLAN to sink some USN ships. I would almost like to read “USS James E. Carter, SSN 23, sunk.”

This comes from a DNC that honored the Russian Navy and the Turkish Air acrobat team last year at their national convention.

"How can we afford to buy a new ship? With the sequester and all..?

Not to worry! They plan to have the ship do double duty. Mooch and the obozo kids can use the thing to be ferried from vacation to vacation.

That'll give it a real workout!

FROM SFGATE earlier this year:

It is official: The San Francisco Board of Supervisors backs the idea of the Navy naming a vessel after gay political leader Harvey Milk. But the decision came only after debating the power of symbolism and consulting with a spirit board.

The non-binding resolution, approved 9-2, urges the Secretary of the Navy to christen a ship the U.S.S. Harvey Milk. It supports the request of San Diego Congressman Bob Filner, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee.

naming a war ship to a woman who now wants guns banned and who was shot.

You can;t even make this up.

Still, we might even get a warship named after her lying, hypocritical husband in a few years.

Wait till the biggest fairy homosexual is killed. We’ll be hearing how a warship is named after him now and how the ship will go on a diversity tour.

Said the same last night.

Because someone gets shot doesn;t now make them a hero,or brave.
I;m sick of hearing the word hero, even for the military they are not all hero’s.

bedding storeman,cooks, officer waiters etc.
Hell one guy joined the national guard, he wears his uniform to go to chic-fi-a and the manager came over to him and thanked him for his service and gave him a free meal.
Then told the crowd give a big hand for our hero’s.
Problem is that the guy who is the son of my wifes friend only joined to get freebies, he openly admits it.
He;’s only ever been to Ft Benning and only been in for a few months.
Many people who joined care only for their freebies today, and for the likes of this admin or the media to say our hero’s is B/S

She isn’t a deceased Navy veteran. Next we’ll heard about the USS Bill Ayers and the USS Bernadine Dhorn.

What ever happened to the good old days when you had to be dead to have a ship named after you, much less have done something to deserve the honor?
