PARIS Paris police used tear gas and batons to fight crowds who pushed their way onto the landmark Champs-Elysees avenue and toward the presidential palace as part of a huge protest against a draft law allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.
Hundreds of thousands of people - conservative activists, schoolchildren with their parents, retirees, priests - converged on the capital Sunday in a last-ditch bid to stop the bill, many bused in from the French provinces.
The violence took protesters and police by surprise, and suggested that the anti-gay marriage protests have become outlets for anger and disappointment in the presidency of Francois Hollande's presidency.
The lower house of France's parliament approved the "marriage for everyone" bill last month with a large majority, and it's facing a vote in the Senate next month. Both houses are dominated by Hollande's Socialist Party and its allies.
Sustained protests led by opposition conservatives in this traditionally Catholic country have eroded support for the draft law in recent months, and organizers hope Sunday's march will swing the Senate debate against it.
The first few hours of the protest were peaceful. But as it was meant to be winding down, about 100 youths tried to push past police barricades onto the Champs-Elysees, a tree-lined avenue that cuts through central Paris and draws throngs of tourists daily. In an indication of the sensitivity of the issue, protesters had been barred from marching on the Champs.

It’s not just the protests, its the nature of the argument and the fight.
Are you watching, Tokyo Rove, Portman, that moron Chris Wallace had on today? These French men and women possess 5 TIMES the guts you could ever hope to have. We don’t want you any more than these patriots want the socialist weasel who sits in the palace. We despise you almost more than the DemonRats themselves.

Mass protests, civil disobedience, mass strikes....maybe it will have to come to that here. Trying to be nice and civil and polite about it and contact our elected officials doesn't seem to do anything at all. (About ANY issue.)
Anyone wanting on/off either ping list, FREEPMAIL me.
The French are fighting better than we are. WTF.
Generation Identitaire were involved as well. Patriotic young people who want their country back, away from the left and Islam, back to traditional values.
There are pictures on their site.
Unfortunately our young people are too busy watching Honey Boo Boo and listening to Maroonbat 5.
Must not have been any French muslim yutes at this protest.
Good for the French
In all fairness the phrase “today saw mass protests, civil disobedience, and strikes in Paris” is how almost every evening news starts. My cousins are quick to put barricades in the street for almost any excuse. This is about marriage but it’s also about many other issues people are unhappy about.
I don’t think they’re socialists. In fact, they recently overtook the French Socialist Youth on Facebook, and tout this on their page.

“Since Monday, March 11, page Facebook Generation Identity is followed by more contacts than the Movement of Young Socialists. It only took six months of existence Generation Identity to overcome the youth movement of the party that monopolizes power in most of the institutions of our country.
If largely symbolic, this result is not less significant. Especially if we take into account the importance (and impact) of social networks in the lives of young French men and.
Further evidence of consciousness of French youth. Further evidence, too, that the ideological delusions of the Young Socialists are light years away from the concerns of our generation.”

Hooray for the French! I’m going to start calling hot dogs France-furters.
got that right, \The communists, socialist and liberals with their agenda and even the liberal-tarians who infiltrated the party think all of us will shut up and forget this social agenda then they can think again.
If the French who are known for not fighting much can fight then so can many of us and we will not forget and not accept.
Hannity, etc who played it safe talking just fiscal issues, some in the GOP who are not really conservatives but should belong in another party and the elitist can all piss off.
Enough is enough.
This is not about marriage, this is about a step in a bigger agenda and forcing their lifestyle onto us as if it is normal to have children be brought up and taught this homosexuality.
Oh and FOX, Megyn ditzy Kelly and others who have been pushing this agenda and not mentioning the mental illness, the diseases, the name calling of the the base, the likes of Sally Kohn Kellys pal , Rove, Perino, Hume, Krauthammer, Noonan, all pushing this agenda can go to hell too
this is how stupid people are over ehre.
Most blacks oppose this aenda and yet voted for a non white guy
Most muslims oppose this and yet voted for obama
talk radio, elitist establishment all neevr wanted to talk about social conservative issues then they shoudl all join the liberal-tarian party and after speaking to a few today about this then I can tell you that there are some really pissed off people
Will the family research council protest because they can cont on my family and a bunch of guys from ehre being there
Military with men who dres as women, women dresing as men, men and women homosexuals dancing about in some faces.
Rapes on men by men have increased on a massive scale last year and when dont; ask went away
Where is the real facts about homsoexual, homosexuality, what their next step is, who the kids are better off wiht
Actually my comment about mass protests, civil disobedience and strikes solely meant we will have to do them here. I didn’t mean they’re having strikes and civil dis. there, just a mass protest.
In what ways are we courageous?
It used to be conventional wisdom that the US is always 20 years behind Europe in leftward movement. However, here we see that fag marriage is not yet legal in France of all places; and meanwhile we see that John Roberts is preparing to impose fag marriage on the U.S. sometime later this year.
Well...you don’t see many in the USA in the streets in the defense of traditional marriage. I applaud the French on this.
Thanks. Maybe there is hope.
Ah! I see. Americans have never really been on such things. That will take some doing!
Just came from Mass. We live in a world where the priest, during homily, apologizes for criticizing gay marriage and adoption proponents, and then criticizes the former popes at will - and not for their going against the Church, but for writing too intellectually, as if that’s a sin.
I’m not criticizing him. He means well and he’s a priest, after all.
Just saying that when people are caught up in this culture they don’t realize it and they think they’re courageous.
But talking and knowing about something is not the same as getting out and protesting something knowing it’s going to bring personal sacrifice and suffering like the French are doing.
We rely on authorities and the military do fight for us.
The Euros know what it is to have the fight in their own yard.
And we are put to shame when we call them surrender monkeys when they do this demonstration if we don’t do the same.
Anyway, good for them.
I agree. May the French - via Normandy - realize their inner Viking and fight!
