What hiring freeze? Federal government continues to post job openings (4,600 New Jobs)

While hundreds of thousands of federal workers brace for unpaid furloughs starting next month, Uncle Sam is still looking to hire.

In one week alone this month, nearly 2,200 job listings available to the public were posted on USAJobs.gov, the federal government's recruiting site. Add in new postings open only to current or former federal workers, including those laid off, and the number of new openings jumps to more than 4,600.

One critic is Sen. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, who launched a crusade against what he sees as nonessential hiring during the sequester. Coburn compiled a list of recent job openings that were posted during the sequester or in the days leading up to it.

Among them: a counsel for the Morris K. Udall Scholarship Foundation with a salary up to $155,000; a director for the Air Force History and Museums Policies and Programs with pay up to $165,300; law librarians at the Justice Department with salaries reaching $115,742; a Department of Labor assistant to answer phones at a top salary of $81,204; four public affairs specialists with salaries of up to $116,000; as well as several positions for painters for the Air Force and 23 recreation aides.

Kettl* said that while Washington debates the number of federal civilian employees, in reality, they account for about one-twelfth of federal spending. "Most federal spending is in entitlements and defense," he said.

Cutting Federal workers back to part time with full benefits is no way to save money. No privately owned company would do that. It is just screwing the taxpayers.

You're absolutely right, SickofLibs. The legerdemain performed by this administration is truly vertiginous.

If you are a Fed worker at say ~ 50 years old making say $110K per year near DC and get cut back to 4 days a week = 80% salary with full benefits and 100% job security its like a dream come true.
You can catch up on your life in confort.

Not so for the serfs with real jobs.

Read these with articles, and then think about them a bit.

There are groups who are Congressionally mandated to review contracts for military and governmental goods. Many of these groups have “lifers” who started prior to 1984 (i.e.. the GOOD retirement program) and are now at an age where retirement is feasible. I’m aware of several of these agencies that are looking at losing 30+% of their staff over the next 5 years. We are seeing these retirees going on now - before the furlough hits. Seriously, why take a 20% cut in pay - and work - when you can take the same 20% cut in pay and be retired right now?

One of the reasons you are seeing hiring going on now, is because you cannot see the retirees heading out the same door. Many agencies have not hired in years - because most Gov’t workers stay Gov’t workers for life.

It is just screwing the taxpayers.

That's pretty much what's been going on for years.

Under this administration it's now rampaging fully "OUT of CONTROL"

“There is a big difference between a TSA screener and a procurement person.”

That is a valid and accurate statment in the context of the article. Not everybody can do any job. A procurement person (I.E. Contracting Officer or Contracting Specialist) are specialized positions that require quite a bit of education and training (usually some background in business law and/or accounting). I don’t think you can qualify for either of those contracting positions unless you have a 4 year college degree or better.

A TSA screener is more of an entry level position that does not require advanced degrees or experience nor does it have the same types of responsibilities that a contracting position has. Contracting positions put alot of legal & financial obligaions on an employee for the specific work they do and these people really need to be sharp.

A Contracting Officer has the final say on how a contract is written, executed and sometimes awarded. They have to be experts in the world of contracts. They can be held responsible for anything that goes wrong with work that they approved. Their integrity muust be above reproach and they must not have any conflicts of interest. It is a position that can land you in jail if you are not 100% honest.

The article is a bit misleading. The $81,204 salary figure is a top end number for that grade/position meaning in order for you to make that salary you have to work for twenty years. That is not what you make when you start. Probably still overpaid but not nearly as much as the article infers.

Also I seriously doubt that any assistant is being hired to just answer phones. This type of position usually comes with all sorts of tasks assigned to it. I have never seen a FEDGOV job desription for any “assistant” position that says you only answer phones.

Post - yes. Fill- no. I filled an application and after the job closed was sent an e-mail saying that the job is not being filled at this time. Since things are computerized, these jobs were in the que before hiring freeze started.

NAPS you are correct. At least some of these jobs are posted just to keep a pool of qualified applicants ready in case the job really opens up.

Some positions are advertised on USA jobs but the agency already has someone working for them who will get the job but by law they have to post it. This kind of stinks since you can waste aot of time and effort applying for a job that is already filled and that you have no chance of getting.

I should have mentioned in my earlier post that the advertised jobs that are already filled by existing employees usually are the better positions. Sometimes a hint can be in the job description/requirements which are written with such detail as to practically exclude anybody who isn’t already working in that specific type of position.

Whereas other positions in government do not have this requirement.

I know. I couldn’t miss an opportunity to slight the TSA.

Frankly, it looks to me if a fair number of the TSA people capable of flipping hamburgers competently. Come to think of it, maybe the federal recruiters are grabbing up fired Popeyes employees.

And yes, it is a very valid statement. And would make good sense were it not in the context of everything else the government is doing regarding these “cuts”.
