Thomas Sowell to Newsmax: GOP Outreach to Blacks ‘Most Unpromising’
Newsmax ^ | March 22, 2013 | Todd Beamon & John Bachman

Posted on 03/23/2013 10:13:40 AM PDT by jazusamo

Economist and conservative author Thomas Sowell tells Newsmax TV that “Republicans have a decades-long record” of reaching out to the black vote in the “most unpromising way possible.”

And based on the party’s strategy moving forward, he says, not much has changed.

“I’m baffled by so many things that the Republican Party does nationally,” Sowell tells Newsmax on Friday in an exclusive interview.

Sowell, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, tells Newsmax the GOP’s current plan to woo minorities is the same misguided strategy employed decades ago by former President Ronald Reagan.

“When [Reagan] set out to win the black vote, he went to the Urban League,” Sowell said. “He was going to these black establishments as his entrée into the black public, as if the establishment owned the rest of the black people.”

Now, Sowell says, in plans unveiled recently by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, “they’re talking about going to the NAACP, which is the next thing to a fully-owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party — and that’s how they’re going to try to reach blacks.

“All they’re doing is increasing the sense that those are the blacks who matter and that they are the entryway for the rest of the black people,” he says.

Sowell, 82, whose new book is “Intellectuals and Race,” notes how Priebus discussed reaching out to African Americans in Detroit to woo them to the GOP. “You seriously think that’s where you’re going to find Republican voters or blacks who are conservative?”

Sowell says while Republicans are “wavering and moaning and gnashing our teeth” about the failures of national GOP candidates, “Republicans out in the Midwest and in other parts of the country have won a majority of the governors’ chairs.

7. Exile Karl Rove from any position of influence.
8. Call out RINO sellouts, such as the current Govs of FL, VA, and OH, for what they are.

Yeah, thanks....only participating this way when the thread itself is on the subject of the book. And it is, without a doubt. Been fortunate enough to be on Newsmax TV, several national radio shows and others scheduled....but the FR sounding board is extremely valuable to me. The book I wrote in the end was no doubt influenced by the many debates I’ve had on this forum - beyond dispute.

The 96% is not solvable, but all we need to do is knock that down to about 90%, and that’s do able. If we knock it down to 80% one day, the Dem party is done.

Thanks...it astonds me the sour pusses around here want to make sure that no one on FR ever is successful.....and certainly not if FR exposure had anything to do with it.

Funny, I thought that success, with FR playing a part, should be what we all want for every poster on here. You know, FREE enterprise, FREE speech, FREE exchange of ideas, FREEdom of association, etc. Silly me....

And it’s doable with what Dr. Sowell iterates, a party which respects the rule of law, the Constitution, and the three million conservatives who refused to vote for liberal etch a sketch Romney and those who held their nose and did so out of necessity. The blacks and others of good will are going to follow suit.

But the title, then, is misleading.

There are several authors who post here, including, as I’m sure you’re aware, Travis McGee and LS. John Stossel used to post here as well. And there are also several filmmakers who post here. The more the merrier, I always say, and if somebody wants to reference their work in a humble way and without posting a giant link that says “CLICK HERE TO BUY NOW!”, then I don’t see the big deal.

I am much more offended by blog pimps (although probably not as offended as humblegunner is).

FRegards,
LH

I agree the headline is not great, and I instantly knew it was likely misleading based on my knowledge of Sowell....headers are often misleading in fact.

You need to target a certain segment of blacks, middle class black families, that’s the vote the GOP needs to go after, the inner-city population, you can pretty much forget.

Much of the middle-class black vote is un-winnable as well.

Government employees will not vote for a party that wants to cut government. Neither will small business owners who make much of their gross from government contracts. People who think they owe their positions to affirmative action (however much they refuse to admit it, even to themselves) will be unlikely to vote for a party that might reign in the EEOC.

Bottom line, go after net taxpayers (ie, people who pay more in taxes than they receive from government in any form).

I'm baffled, too, Thomas. I'm baffled that they are still a MAJOR party...
