The governor said Friday he had vetoed a bill that would have allowed Utah residents to carry a hidden, unloaded gun without a permit.
It was one of the most hotly contested measures to come out of the Utah Legislature this year.

Can his veto be overridden?
I prefer my guns to be loaded anyway.
Can his veto be overridden?
I think there will be an attempt to do so.
“Republican House Speaker Becky Lockhart has said the bill is veto-proof because it won two-thirds of House and Senate votes.”
Republicans. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Why would you want to carry a hidden, unloaded gun?
Republican House Speaker Becky Lockhart has said the bill is veto-proof because it won two-thirds of House and Senate votes.
How is this a defeat?
“House Speaker Rebecca Lockhart, a Provo Republican, said it’s not clear if there’s enough support among lawmakers for an override...
“People are on record on this issue,” she said. “But a veto override is a pretty serious thing. It’s nothing that we’re going to rush into.”
How does that apply to wheel guns?
one empty chamber
“I prefer my guns to be loaded anyway.”
Yeah, for sure. What’s this law about anyway? Can’t quite see the purpose....
Huh? What kind of dumb idea is that?
If Utah is that anti-gun, Feinstein has a right to be mad at Reid.
Here in TX we once had a Governor who thought she knew what was best for us. No concealed weapons for you, she dictated. Next election ol bitch Ann Richards was defeated. I was sure glad to see her go.
Utah’s definition of unloaded is essentially “no round in the chamber” for semi-autos, and “no round under the hammer plus two mechanical actions required to fire” for revolvers.
Let us hope and pray the veto is over-ridden.
May as well outlaw rocks...An unloaded gun in your pocket is no more effective than a rock in the other pocket...One is just as lethal as the other...
Ahhh those were the days, weren't they? When the nation and the majority of its citizens still seemed to make some sense.
What's the point of carrying an unloaded gun? You'd be better off carrying a concealed pipe wrench.
In Utah, unloaded means:
semi-auto pistol may have full mag, but not a round chambered.
revolver must have cylinder under hammer empty, as well as next one to rotate up empty, hence requiring two pulls to fire.
First this Utah Governor gary herbert guy scolds the county sheriffs for saying they will not enforce unConstitutional laws emanating from Sodom on the Potomac and now this.
I would advise the patriots of Utah that it is time to vote this loser out of office.
There ya go, buy the doubled 1911 with one chamber ready to go.
Used one of my most enjoyable votes there.
Thanks, that makes a lot more sense
You got me, sounds pretty stupid to me, just more crap from the political class the members of which need to be strung up in toto.
Poooor Ann, she was born with a nasty turd in her mouth and has bit the dust; but, the liberals are trying to revive her with a Broadway play.
Utah is a great place but why do they elect these bozos as Gov?
I can’t believe Utah elected this loser. He should be kicked out of the republican party. He’s a republican in the most conservative State and hes for curtailing 2nd amendment rights?
He obviously knows as little of his people as he knows of the history of his own state. The 2nd amendment is particular important to the history of Utah.
Most likely deception, their governor is probably just anther lying liberal who would have run as a democrat anywhere else.
This of course Begs the question, why did Utah’s “republican” Governor take such a nutty stand? Is some poison in the water of Utah governor’s mansion, or is the man a democratic fraud?
Wisconsin went through this several times with "Diamond Jim" Doyle Vetoing each attempt. Brought back for an override vote, Doyle flipped two democRATs and tanked the bill. The next time it came up, he only flipped one (the Senator in my district!), we were so POed we tried recalling him and failed by a squeaker. We didn't get a CCW bill through until we elected Scot Walker. The Dems and union people were so ticked about the recalls they mounted one against Walker and six Republican Senators. We held the line on Walker and only lost two Senators, leaving us two thirds to get business done without making deals all over the map.
Shows what you can do when you get the adults organized! If we ever get the fraud in Milwaukee and Dane Counties under control, Wisconsin will shine "Rosie Red"!
There is a simple, obvious, and true answer: the governor is a politician without much knowledge about this issue, and is under enormous pressure from the MSM. This is how the MSM exerts a very large amount of control in this country. They choose the issues, frame the issues, and report on how the politicians react to their views of the issues.
Politicians live and die by how the media treat them.
So your sating the Governor of Utah is simply too stupid to know most of his states population id inclined to watch Foxnews not MSNBC.
The Governor just earned his name.
Close. I am saying that the Governor pays much more attention to ABC,NBC,CBS, the NYTs, the Salt Lake Tribune, AP, and the rest of the MSM, than he does to Fox, Freerepublic, or conservative blogs.
Which would limit a six gun to four rounds. That's lame.
Does that definition include revolvers??? For a semi-auto, that concept makes sense, as you would have to rack the slide to chamber the first round.
Lame? That’s the definition of unloaded here. You want lame, go to California.
Four rounds sounds lame where ever you are to me. YMMV
Son of a voinovich!!! More RINOtastic crap from a Governor of UTAH. And he’s just been reelected!
Constitutional carry is good enough for Vermont but not for the Republican Governor of the most conservative and Republican state? FAIL!
If it passed by more than 2to1 I assume override is likely.
most of this stuff is foreign to u and me...we live in the only state in the union that does not allow any carry.
Yikes. I'm glad the legislature appears to have the votes to override him.
I can't figure out what the heck is going on with Utah. Orrin Hatch is a squish, but who GOP voters put in the Governor's office goes beyond that problem. They don't even RUN candidates for Governor who SOUND "conservative" on paper. They nominate New England style "moderate" RINOs in one of the MOST conservative states in the union (Alaska has the same problem with their federal delegation, but a lot of that has to do with behind-the-scenes election shenanigans)
As I recall, Leavitt, Walker, Huntsman, AND now Herbert deviated from the GOP platform on some MAJOR issues and were pretty pathetic as far as mainstream Republicans go. Walker inherited the office when Leavitt resigned, I don't know how we ended up with the other three.
How about Governor Norman H. Bangerter (served 1985-1993)? Was he was a decent reliable conservative? I know virtually nothing about the guy. Maybe Fieldmarshaldj could give us some insight.
I don’t know too much about Bangerter beyond some general facts. He was a pretty committed Mormon, however, and was serving on a South Africa mission for several years back in the late ‘90s when I wrote his office. Curiously, when he was elected in 1984, there hadn’t been a Republican elected Governor since 1960 (he succeeded Scott Matheson, who chose not to seek a 3rd term, which he probably could’ve easily won). Like Herbert, he had risen up from the state legislature (he was the House Speaker when elected Governor).
Barone remarked in the 1986 Almanac of American Politics that most of Utah’s best and brightest in the GOP (or most able, as he put it) tended not to run for Governor. They ran “nice guys” who weren’t looking to be bold leaders but servants. From what I gleaned on Bangerter, he was more interested with the nuts and bolts of specific policy (such as education). Whether any Utahns FReepers have any other particular insights into his two terms, I’d yield to them.
Still, it is appalling that a state like Utah has elected such disappointments over the past 2 decades (Leavitt, Huntsman & Herbert, with Huntsman being a fraud and phony to equal Slick Willard).
Not even a little pocket here in the fatherland of Chi as far as I know.
I guess we should learn karate.
It’s disgusting, it seems many states are like the Presidency, good Governors are few are far between.
There is no excuse in Utah.
Or Texas!! I talking to you Perry lovers! The governorships are crucial. It’s time to take out the trash.
Override won’t happen thanks to the State Senate. BOOOOOOOOOOO.
If we could just abolish the 17th amendment and let those wonderful Utah State Senators select U.S. Senators for life, our Republic would be saved.
