1 in 10 U.S. Deaths Blamed on Salt
ABC News ^ | March 21, 2013 | Katie Moisse and some possible grant junkies

On the heels of a study linking sugary drinks to 25,000 U.S. deaths a year, new research suggests salty food is even more dangerous.

The new study, by the same Harvard research team, linked excessive salt consumption to nearly 2.3 million cardiovascular deaths worldwide in 2010. One in 10 Americans dies from eating too much salt, the researchers found.

“The burden of sodium is much higher than the burden of sugar-sweetened beverages,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health and author of both the salt and sugary drink studies. “That’s because sugar-sweetened beverages are just one type of food that people can avoid, whereas sodium is in everything.”

Mozaffarian and colleagues used data from 247 surveys on sodium intake and 107 clinical trials that measured how salt affects blood pressure, and how blood pressure contributes to cardiovascular disease like heart attacks and stroke.

“From that we could determine the health effects of sodium,” he said, adding that one out of three deaths due to excessive sodium occurred before age 70. “It’s really affecting younger adults, not just the elderly.”

The study, presented today at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans, adds to mounting evidence that packaged and processed foods containing high levels of salt for flavor and shelf life can take a heavy toll on cardiovascular health.

“It’s really amazing how pervasive it is,” Mozaffarian said of salt. “For the average person, it’s very hard to avoid salt – you have to be incredibly motivated, incredibly educated, have access to a range of foods and do all the cooking yourself.”

But not everything is easy to whip up at home, Mozaffarian added. Bread and cheese are the top two sources of sodium in the U.S.

“It’s everywhere,” he said.

There is no difference in health benefits

Both are over 90% NaCl

Sea salt may taste better...i think it does....i use Maldon sea salt flakes
Sea salt may have more impurities like magnesium

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think; I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy who likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?"

What? No Taco Bell???????

The sequester is cutting into research grants, so researchers are putting out ever more dire predictions of doom to ensure that they will get a piece of a rapidly shrinking pie.

I make white bread. Homemade white bread with homemade mayo and bacon make a BLT to die for. I prefer bananas with my peanut butter. I love cinnamon toast. Fried bologna is ok. Don't care for bread pudding. When I have leftover stale bread, I make breadcrumbs or croutons and throw them in the freezer. One of my favorites is tuna mixed with homemade mayo and a little dill or dill pickle relish on homemade bread--yum.

The taste, and the texture as well, of homemade bread is better than any store bought bread I've ever eaten. Took a little getting used to, after a lifetime of store bought bread, but I've been eating homemade so long that the other kind is pretty much tasteless and gummy to me now.

All Americans eat salt.

All eventually die.

The problem is worse than we thought.

It's not the amount of NaCl. It's what's refined out (trace minerals) and what's put in (I forget what it is and don't have a container of white table salt to look at, but some additive is put in keep it from clumping; I put uncooked rice in my salt shakers with the sea salt to keep it from clumping and it works like a charm).

Sea salt may have more impurities like magnesium

Over 60 trace elements that our bodies need. I use Himalayan pink salt, and a brand called Real Salt that's mined in Utah. I also keep kosher salt on hand to put in the water to boil pasta and the like.

Over the years going back to the sixties I remember that we couldn't do THIS (fill in your favorite activity) because it would kill us. Then it changed to “Yes of course you can do that). Boy Scouts learning or using a tourniquet is a great example of this. If you read the BSA handbook rules over the years it flipped back and forth from “Yes use a tourniquet” to “No don't use one.” This is more of the same. The human body needs salt and all of us need the same amount of salt —— only a little different. This is pure nanny state crap.

“This so-called “doctor” should learn the difference between sugar and HFCS. I can’t find many soft drinks sweetened with real cane sugar. Most of what I find is sweetened with HFCS.”

Buy a Sodastream maker and make your own soda from syrup and water that you fizz yourself. It works great, the machine is not electrical, the soda tastes as good or better than store bought, there are tons of flavors, both regular and diet and there is no HFCS in the syrups. I love mine. Use it all the time. Cheaper, no schlepping of bottles from store, therefore less dumping of bottles/cans/plastic into garbage dumps. All plusses, no negatives, and no, I don’t work for Sodastream. Just a retired and happy drinker of their product.

This is essentially complete and utter crap. Salt is crucial for health; it is one of the 4 electrolytes (along with mag, cal and potasium).

Table salt, aka, refined salt, has all the good minerals stripped out and then they add bleaching and anti caking, along with a miniscule amount of iodine to prevent goiter. This kind of salt is very bad. BUT....unrefined salt emulates your blood and is VERY good for you. Good salt keeps you hydrated and healthy and you should consume it abundantly. Celtic sea salt, Redmonds, himalayan pink salt, etc., are all good. Real salt is not white.

Don’t listen to these bastards; they’ll kill you. There’s a fantastic book out by Dr. David Brownstein called Salt your way to health, and you will learn alot about the truth of salt from this book.

While you’re at it, buy Bragg’s apple cider vinegar too. It’s excellent for your health.

The Bragg’s amino is so much like soy you won’t be able to tell the diff, IMO.
