Israeli Official: Chemical Weapons Used in Syria

A senior Israeli official said Wednesday that it is "apparently clear" that chemical weapons were recently used in Syria, and that the alleged attack will be a main topic of conversation with visiting President Barack Obama.

...

A senior defense official told the Associated Press that he concurred chemical weapons had been used, basing that on intelligence reports. He would not elaborate. He spoke anonymously because he is not allowed to speak to the media.

Israel has repeatedly expressed concern that Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants like Lebanon's Hezbollah, an Assad ally, or an al-Qaida-linked group fighting with the rebels.

Steinitz said that after Iran's nuclear program, the fate of Syria's chemical weapons is the second most urgent issue that will be discussed with Obama during his 48 hour visit that begins Wednesday afternoon.

"It is apparently clear that chemical weapons were used," Steinitz said. "The fact they apparently used chemical weapons against civilians needs to worry us and shows the urgency of taking care of the issue," he said.

Syrian rebels and Assad's government blamed each other Tuesday for a chemical attack on a northern village.

“Israel has repeatedly expressed concern that Syria’s chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants...”

I have a very uncomfortable feeling that they already have a fair portion of it, already. Hope I’m wrong.

These are the NONEXISTANT weapons of ‘mass destruction’ that ‘Bush’ ‘lied’ about Hussein stockpileing.

‘Course Bush ALSO gave him fourteen months to slip them to his buddy in Syria. Now that the bad guys have them, it doesn’t make much difference. It’s just a case of the badguys fighting the other badguys—kinda like the Iran/Iraq war.

Plague on both houses, as it were.

No they aren't.

Syria has had it's own gigantic chemical weapons production program and stockpile since the 1970s.

I just don't get how people can be so continually stupid about this - chemical weapons in Syria simply aren't proof that Iraq had chemical weapons in 2003, as the Syrian chemical weapon stockpile that has NOTHING TO DO WITH IRAQ has been long reported and discussed going back to the 80s and 90s.

Where did people get the idea that chemical weapons are these magical, incredibly rare things that only Saddam Hussein could have ever produced? Every "Evil" regime in the world, to include Libya, North Korea, Syria, and others, has built their own chemical weapons.

Yes, but didn’t the admin just shoot down Russia and Syria’s claims of chemical weapons usage as ‘false’ and ‘without evidence’. Sounds like they were trying to weasel their way out of the idiotic promise of action should chemical weapons be used.

I agree though. Plague on both their houses. And the White House too.

There were convoys of Russian trucks going from Iraq to Syria for the 14 months we were playing silly games with the UN. I’m willing to bet they weren’t hauling board games.

There’s no way chemical weapons were used in Syria... no one would dare to defy President Sparky’s “red line”...

And unfortunately, unless anyone ever finds a CW shell in Syria with "Made in Iraq" stamped on it, the above claims will never be proven.

My problem is people associating reports of chemical weapons in Syria with "proof" of the claims that chemical weapons were shipped from Syria to Iraq.

Because Syria ALREADY had tons and tons of their OWN chemical weapons BEFORE any were allegedly sent there from Iraq (and they have undoubtedly produced tons and tons more of their own chemical weapons at their own CW plants in Syria in the last 10 years) evidence of chemical weapons in Syria does NOTHING to prove Iraq had chemical weapons in 2003. It's simple logic, and claiming that the existence of Syrian chemical weapons proves Iraq had them in 2003 just makes people look stupid.

Check the date. Again, this is a very simple point:

The Associated Press

June 25, 1998, Thursday, PM cycle

U.S. says Syria has nerve gas aboard missiles, artillery, airplanes

The Clinton administration says Syria has an active chemical weapons program and has armed missiles, warplanes and artillery shells with the nerve gas sarin. The Mideast country had help developing the arsenal from Indian companies and possibly from a retired Russian general, a knowledgeable official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“Where did people get the idea”?

By watching the Russian Army dismantle the Iraqi facilities, and then truck the product into Syria.

No, the administration weaseled their way out of their “red line” statement because the “wrong side” used the chemical weapons. The administration will not go to Syria and attack the rebels, even if they did use chemical weapons, because it’s the rebels they support. Now, if the Syrian government troops were the ones being accused, it would be full steam ahead!

Uh, yea; maybe. We’re supposed to believe the Clinton administration; Debka Files, political front mag for the Israeli gov’t and a “senior” Israeli official? There’s one small problem with all of this; chemical weapons, by their very nature, disburse in unpredictable ways. Syria is a small place and the use of WMD’s against an entrenched enemy would likely cause significant colateral damage. Unless I’m mistaken, Assad and his family still reside in Damascus.

It is widely reported that thes WMD’s were exported from Libya and shipped into the hands of the NATO supported Al Queda rebels in Syria all under the auspices of US, Israel, EU & GB. Looks like we will need to rev up a court for War Crimes! Let’s start with Clinton (YugoSlavia), add GWBush (Iraq/AfPak) and top it off with BHO (Libya & Syria). After that it is time to disband the UN, EU, IMF, World Bank, ECB, FRS, etc., etc. The Corruption must be destroyed.

I recall Obimbo saying that the use of chemical weapons by Syria is a line that “must not be crossed.”

I wait with baited breath to see what Obaby’s reaction will be now that they’ve done it.
