The Associated Press is standing by its report that Sen. Rand Paul intended to back a path to citizenship in his speech Tuesday to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, despite the fact that he did not do so, and despite claims from advisers that the AP's story is wrong.

The AP obtained an advance copy of Sen. Paul’s remarks on Monday and reported that he would be "endorsing a pathway to citizenship for the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants." That report led to headlines across news outlets ranging from Fox News to The Washington Post to the Huffington Post claiming that Sen. Paul had endorsed "a pathway to citizenship."
But in a subsequent statement, Paul's office said the AP story was incorrect

I have contacted every senate office via either phone or fax. I am urging them to ensure that such checks will include cross checking voter registration roles. We all know that amnesty is a voter registration drive for democrats. But, even though we are going to see congress forgive illegal entry, we should not accept people who have broken additional laws by committing vote fraud.
Not one office has responded positively. In fact, the only office that even responded at all.
I’m beginning to wonder if the 0bama and the dims found some serious blackmail material on Rand.

He’s more conservative than most of the GOP. But still pretty liberal. His statements and vote a couple weeks back on confirmation prove he is not to be trusted.
Let the fanboys scream. He had a fit in the media, made noise, then caved. That’s the reality. Thus he is not to be trusted.
Well, you can just read his speech. You won’t find anything about a path to citizenship or amnesty in it.
What good is a background check on an illegal immigrant anyway? I doubt they are going to check on their background in their country of origin, and most of them are living/working here under assumed names, so they won’t pick up much here.
I have not. I’m still in the process of education.
I too believe that Paul prefers a plan that will lead to amnesty. The context of the quote is in the competing news stories from outlets known to be unfriendly to Republicans in general.
Paul’s libertarian streak looks to be almost as large as his father’s. How large remains to be seen.
But we also must treat those who are already here with understanding and compassion.
The first part of my plan – border security – must be certified by Border Patrol and an Investigator General and then voted on by Congress to ensure it has been accomplished.
This is what I call, Trust but Verify.
With this in place, I believe conservatives will accept what needs to come next, an issue that must be addressed: what becomes of the 12 million undocumented workers in the United States?
My plan is very simple and will include work visas for those who are here, who are willing to come forward and work.
A bipartisan panel would determine number of visas per year. High tech visas would also be expanded and have a priority. Special entrepreneurial visas would also be issued.
Fairness is key in any meaningful immigration reform, but this fairness would cut both ways:
The modernization of our visa system and border security would allow us to accurately track immigration.
It would also enable us to let more people in and allow us to admit we are not going to deport the millions of people who are currently here illegally.
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Yes Rand. Let us expand the high tech visas so more programmers from China can do high tech espionage for minimum wage and keep our American programmers on welfare.
Because God knows, if American companies can save a buck, what’s a few catastrophic product failures in sensitive areas?
