Right blasts RNC 'autopsy' as power grab By: Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman March 18, 2013 12:21 PM EDT

The GOP’s prescription to cure the ills that helped bring on yet another disastrous presidential cycle would revamp its presidential nominating rules in ways to benefit well-funded candidates and hamper insurgents - a move that quickly heated up the already smoldering feud between the Republican establishment and the tea party-inspired base.

Tucked in near the end of the 97-page report, formally known as The Growth and Opportunity Project, are less than four pages that amount to a political bombshell: the five-member panel urges halving the number of presidential primary debates in 2016 from 2012, creating a regional primary cluster after the traditional early states and holding primaries rather than caucuses or conventions.

Each of those steps would benefit a deep-pocketed candidate in the mold of Mitt Romney. That is, someone who doesn’t need the benefit of televised debates to get attention because he or she can afford TV ads; has the cash to air commercials and do other forms of voter contact in multiple big states at one time; and has more appeal with a broader swath of voters than the sort of ideologically-driven activists who typically attend caucuses and conventions.

The recommendations are also a nod to the party’s donor class. Several donors bluntly told RNC Chair Reince Priebus at meetings right after the election that they wanted Iowa, with its more conservative base, to have less of a role in the process.

Isn’t it sad when not only do you feel like an insurgent in your own country, but you actually are one in your own party?

What utter horse crap. The GOP has decided that they need to be Democrat Lite in order to get power. Is there any further proof needed that we need to kill the GOP once and for all.

This is nothing but a platform for Jeb Bush.

Good Lord, please no more Bushes. I am sick to death of the RINO establishment.

BS!
More than several voters will bluntly tell the business as usual GOP that if they embrace suicide, that's fine with them. The conservative base is longer lasting and ultimately much more powerful than the "business as usual" donors. Want to make a clear distinction and a real choice? Listen to the conservative base.

Ignore them at your peril!

The problem is the GOP isn’t going to die quickly.
And in the decade or so of coming infighting, I see Dems accomplishing nationally what they’ve done in California - permanent supermajority status.

I haven't needed further proof for years. In any case, they are doing a fantastic job of killing themsekves. I say let them, and show me an alternative.

There needs to be some change in the candidate selection process. Mitt Romney was the choice of no more than a third of the people. I have a problem with that.

Winner take all states distorts the strength of a candidate.

I would make one simple change that puts the primary on a par with the national election:

Every congressional district would have 1 delegate and every state would have 2. Winners of congressional districts would take that district only. (If one wants more delegates for a bigger party, then make make each district X and each state 2X.) Delegates would be pledged to the candidate winning their district barring late emergencies. There will be no super-delegates.

Any leading candidate will only be the automatic nominee if they secure 50% of the vote prior to the convention. Otherwise, the delegates at the convention will vote until one candidate has 50%, with the first round of voting narrowing the field down to two candidates unless one achieves 50% for a win.

“This is nothing but a platform for Jeb Bush.”

Oh, God. I hope not. Hillary will wipe the floor with him. Heck, *Biden* would wipe the floor with him.

After W did so much to wreck the party, why would the GOP leaders go anywhere near his gene pool for at least another generation or two?

None of these top-down tactics from RINOs - or even conservatives for that matter - mean much without good candidates. Dole, McCain and Romney lost not just because they were RINOs. They lost because they were duds and could not persuade enough people to rally behind them. A huge percentage out there don’t know the difference between a RINO, DINO or CINO. But they know a lousy used car salesman when they see it. In fact I would go further and say our side needs more than great candidates. We need extraordinary candidates just to offset Santa Claus on the other side.
