A controversial article published in Philadelphia Magazine this month has the attention of the Nutter Administration.
The article, titled “Being White in Philly,” features a series of interviews with anonymous white residents from different areas of the city who share stories about their interaction with black residents.
Mayor Nutter calls the article’s tone “disgusting,” and he’s asked the Human Relations Commission to investigate some of the sensitive racial issues explored in the piece.
Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald says this is all about fact finding.
“I think he feels that there are enough problems in this article that it warrants a closer look,” McDonald explains.
PHRC executive director Rue Landau says the commission shares Mayor Nutter’s concerns, and they were already looking at intergroup relations in the city, particularly in changing communities.
The PHRC will hold a public meeting in the Fairmount/Brewerytown section of the city on April 18th, and residents are encouraged to attend to share their stories, concerns, and recommendations for changes. The location has yet to be determined.
In a statement, Philadelphia Magazine editor Tom McGrath says the mayor, like any reader, is entitled to think and say anything he wants about the article and that the need to have a deeper discussion about race in Philadelphia is exactly why they ran the story in the first place.

I applaud the mayor for asking for an inquiry into the state of racial issues in Philadelphia. The need to have a deeper discussion about race in Philadelphia is exactly why we ran our story in the first place.
Like any reader, the mayor is entitled to think and say what he wants about the story. That said, his sophomoric statements about the magazine and mischaracterization of the piece make me wonder if he’s more interested in scoring political points than having a serious conversation about the issues. Furthermore, his call for a “rebuke” of the magazine by the PHRC is rich with irony. This is the same mayor who just yesterday was shouted down by an unruly mob in City Council; now he himself wants shut down conversation about an important issue in our city. In short, the mayor loves the First Amendment–as long as he and the government can control what gets said.
Philly is but one of many cities full of holders people i avoid.
For just that reason.

Black racism is as ugly and deadly as white racism. “Affirmative Action” is a institutionalized system of racial discrimination.
We should shame liberals for promoting black and hispanic superiority/white inferiority doctrines for power just as we stopped the elite from preaching white racial superiority for power.
Dems need to get a new gig. Whites need to stop playing suckers.
All in all it's a mild article describing the views of some extremely forgiving whites who have a lot to forgive.
The mayor is being dishonest.

Personally, I’m surprised that Nutter has any relationships with humans. He should be in a zoo eating oats with other horse’s asses.

Remember stories of the bad old days, before enlightenment, when whites treated blacks like 2nd-class citizens, dismissed them, attacked them, loathed them, etc.?
That is how many blacks now seem to feel about whites, except they don’t have anybody telling them they are wrong.

Yeah, it seemed like the only white person interviewed that wasn't afraid to speak freely was "Anna" the Russian immigrant who basically asked "why do all of you pay taxes so they can sit on their porch and smoke pot all day?"
I smell diversionary tactics - Nutter should really be worried about relations with the government workers unions in the city after they disrupted his speech to city council this week and forced him to move the venue to his own office before he could finish - always delightful to see a ‘rat attacked by those who are usually supporters......
Why can’t folks just say it. If whites are racist then blacks damn well are racist in today’s America. This is a black mayor in a black, one party city, in which every position of power is held by blacks, and they are going after anyone daring to raise a white perspective.
You are watching evil unbridled racism, and they plan to be racist and to squash anyone who brings it up.

I went to school in Philly many, many years ago...and he's unhappy about that article? Nutter must be deaf, dumb and blind -- Philly is in much, much worse shape than the article suggests.
Awful. And let's not forget this:
Three teens charged in horrific Christmas night carjacking, sex assault on woman, 22 in Upper Darby, the suburb abutting Philadelphia's southwest boundary, on Christmas night. Carjacked her and kept raping her driving around in her SUV for five hours, even after she vomited. Woman white; three teens PoC's.
Our block has one African-American family and one family actually born in Africa, although they recently became citizens. The Africans are appalled by most black Americans. To me, the African-borns are wonderful neighbors, in no small part because in their country, the Bible is still taught as a required course in all grades. Being around them is like being around my own church and neighborhood back in the 50s -- the people you can trust.
Our country has been ruined by the Supreme Court.
Isn't there some loudmouth white Hispanic homosexual on the City Council who drove the Boy Scouts to wrack and ruin?
