Sacred mystery: Blockbuster ratings for ‘The Bible’ confound Hollywood
The Washington Times ^ | Thursday, March 14, 2013 | Daniel Wattenberg

Sure, it’s easy to criticize Hollywood, but try to remember that the entertainment industry today is an intellectually demanding environment, fraught with cognitively challenging, even intractable, questions, like, to take one recent example: How can the cable mini-series “The Bible” be such a ratings hit when there is no audience for overtly religious entertainment programming?

According to the latest Nielsens, released Tuesday, Sunday night’s telecast of “The Bible,” produced by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey for basic cable’s History channel, managed to attract more viewers than anything on broadcast network NBC … during the entire week ...

I cannot tell you what good news this is, that Hollywood cannot see the nose on its face. They missed the boat on "Passion of the Christ," and now the Bible miniseries.

And to think, that every time they poll their best friends at the country club in Santa Monica, they can't find a single person who likes pro-Christian, pro-military, and pro-traditional entertainment!

They are just baffled at the ratings. Yet the Times poll asked if Hollywierd would do more of this kind of filming and the poll showed that the majority of people said no.
Spielberg has turned down Moses.

The Holy Spirit moves in interesting ways...

The Hollywood phrase is: “Non-recurring phenomenon.” That way they don’t have to think about it. Today, the vast sums earned by “The Passion of the Christ” have been forgotten by Hollywood. “Sugar tits” is remembered...

Box Office Shocker: How Moviemaking Georgia Church Behind ‘Courageous’ Outperforms Hollywood

Before the filmmakers for Sherwood Pictures shot the first frame of Courageous, they prayed. It’s right there in the press materials. They did the same thing with Sherwood’s previous theatrical releases, Facing the Giants in 2006 and Fireproof in 2008. None of these Christian-themed movies is up to Hollywood production standards, though by one metric — box office compared to budget — they’re some of the most profitable films in modern history.

While Iron Man 2 and Thor earned three times their production budgets, Giants was made for $100,000 and took in $10.2 million domestically, 102 times its budget. Fireproof cost $500,000 but earned $33.5 million, a multiple of 67 on its budget, and Courageous, made for $2 million, earned eight times that in its first 10 days. It bowed No. 4 at the box office with$9.1 million from 1,161 theaters.

It seems Sherwood — a company few in Hollywood have even heard of — has discovered the secret for making films on a shoestring that people will line up to see in theaters. Maybe it’s all that praying.

The History Chennel used to be my favorite channel, by far.
Then, after about a decade of pawn shops, ice truckers and ghost hunting, I stopped watching completely.

I assumed that ‘The Bible’ would be presented in an offensive manner, so I haven’t tuned in. Is it any good?

Maybe it has something to do with the business still being run by people who grew up watching the old epics like The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, The Greatest Story Ever Told, etc., and it still seems old-fashioned. In other words they are bad at their jobs.

It is good. The story moves very fast so don't expect it to convert anyone, but for those of who are Christian it brings some of the best stories to life and reminds us of some details that are fascinating. I can't wait for the evenings on the life and crucifixion of Jesus.

I don’t find it offensive. To me, though, some of it is presented in a confusing way. I don’t deal so well with flashbacks. LOL!

.
If Mel Gibson would only produce “Acts of the Apostles” starting with the Resurrection. That would be one heck of an adventure story.

You will be pleasantly surprised if you watch it. I was skeptical, but so far the stories seem to adhere to the Holy scriptures. I decided to watch it after hearing Sara Palin’s endorsement a couple of months ago. It will be out on DVD just a few days after Easter. Highly recommend.

People are lookng for TRUTH. God has placed eternity in the hearts of man and he instinctively knows it will not be found apart from God.

I have long believed that Hollywood would also achieve enormous audiences and ratings if they produced real stories of the heroism and humanitarian deeds performed by our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other theaters of combat.

Of course, that might make George W. Bush and out military look good, so they will never do it.

But there's a ton of money to be made

I honestly get chills just thinking of that idea. Would be amazing. So much there that is missed by most Christians, let alone the rest of the people.

The final scenes of the story should be the execution of Sts. Peter and Paul.
