Republican senator reverses his opposition to gay marriage after his 21-year-old son comes out

A respected Republican senator has announced he is reversing his stance against gay marriage after his 21-year-old son came out to him and his wife.

Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican considered as a running mate by the Romney campaign, said the discovery that his son Will, 21, was gay had given him a 'new perspective' and understanding of why equal opportunities matter.

Will, a junior at Yale University, came out to his politician father and mother, Jane, two years ago, The Plain Dealer reports.

Portman, who backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, says since his son's announcement he has been reconsidering his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

He said he had spent some time speaking to his church in Cincinnati and former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is gay.

Today he wanted to officially and publicly reverse his political position on the issue.

'It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,' Portman told the local paper.

'The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue.'

He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution' and he realized his son's sexuality 'wasn't a choice'.

He said his son had not exerted any influence on him politically but supported his new position and 'encouraged' him.

It’s like saying I’ve changed my position on cancer since I found out my brother has it.

**
Good analogy.

Another sad example of putting personal interests over the interests of the people. Toss the a$$ out of office.

Yeah, Saran thought he had it all wrapped up, but I saw right through him.

You can tell this hypocrite’s faith really meant a lot to him. Instead of trying to get the boy help and his head screwed on straight, he put the son ahead of God. This hypocrital worm should never set foot inside a church again.
So I guess we know which way candy-ass, girly man Portland will vote on the Defense of Marriage Act. What a loser.

I'll bet Rob Portman is his son's best friend too, and NOT his parent.

When his son "came out," Portman should have "parented"!

He can and should love his son, but not cave to his son's homosexuality, while rejecting GOD and marriage between one man and one woman.

“The sodomites love that position.”

I don’t get it. I think that they love that the state is involved, I don’t see why they wouldn’t? It gives them the power to punish and keep punishing those who will never buy into ‘gay marriage’ or whatever other impossibility the state decides to recognize as a marriage. They love that the state defines the institution for so many and that they have been conditioned to accept whatever the state acccepts as marriage, even something everyone knew was impossible only 30 years ago.

I think that is the big reason why it will never happen, it’s got people on both sides who want the state involved for completely different reasons.

Who's stopping him from marrying a woman?

In my opinion, in today's version of the prodigal, the prodigal has no need to return to his father, he merely sends the old man a text, informing him he's gay and tells him to put more money in his account.

He adds, he'll bring his latest lover home for a meet & greet at Thanksgiving, if he has time!

The old man texts his son back asking, "which bank R U using now?" Adding, "Ur mom & I can't wait 2 see U & Leslie!"

Ah, there is another good man of principle... not.

You are correct, he can still love the son but not the action.

If the SOB had been a real father to the boy and showed him how to be a man, and how to take care of a family, and how to put God first in his life, the boy not have turned into a sodomite, which is a learned trait. Candy ass Robbie was too busy being bossed around by his wife to be a real father. Never in my life have I met a homosexual that had a strong father in the home. Blame this creep Portland for the son’s fall.

Portman is a reliable financial conservative vote, except when it goes too far toward the people but was considered by others as a good pick for GOP Veep choice because his leanings didn’t “offend anyone!”

Very disappointing... I’ve always liked the guy. Thought he would have been a smart choice for VP. So, don’t feel like you’re the only one fooled.

You either believe in marriage, or you don’t. NOTHING my two sons could ever do or say or think they are changes my opinion about the institution defined by God.

This will hurt Republicans badly. As someone else said, Portman will now be invited on to EVERY lib TV show... and, they use to say we’re ALL hypocrits.

Great post! Along the same lines:

1) If his teenage daughter got pregnant and wanted to abort, would he start supporting abortion on demand?

2) If his son liked young boys instead of grown men, would he support repeal of age of consent laws for homosexuals?

If Portmans father was gay he wouldn't exist. Therefore his son is gay so his grandchildren
will never exist. Marriage is about procreation, not sexual perversion. He should resign immediately in support of fags.

If so, it will still be more transparent than the Obama administration.

And we are to read from these stories that when the Prodigal Son returns to his Father, his Father not only forgives him and accepts him, but changes all the rules of the House to accommodate the depravity the Prodigal Son has become accustomed to.

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" - Romans 6:1-2

Portman does his son no favors by condoning behavior that God expressly names as abomination.

He is lecturing us about the Bible??

He is a total disgrace as a Senator to use the Bible as evidence for promoting a degenerate lifestyle.
