Republican senator reverses his opposition to gay marriage after his 21-year-old son comes out
Daily Mail ^ | March 15, 2013 | Katie Davies

A respected Republican senator has announced he is reversing his stance against gay marriage after his 21-year-old son came out to him and his wife.

Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican considered as a running mate by the Romney campaign, said the discovery that his son Will, 21, was gay had given him a 'new perspective' and understanding of why equal opportunities matter.

Will, a junior at Yale University, came out to his politician father and mother, Jane, two years ago, The Plain Dealer reports.

Portman, who backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, says since his son's announcement he has been reconsidering his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

He said he had spent some time speaking to his church in Cincinnati and former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is gay.

Today he wanted to officially and publicly reverse his political position on the issue.

'It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,' Portman told the local paper.

'The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue.'

He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution' and he realized his son's sexuality 'wasn't a choice'.

He said his son had not exerted any influence on him politically but supported his new position and 'encouraged' him.

The Bible ‘converts’ never seem to be willing to explain how/why ‘man’ was created such as he is physically and that ‘woman’ was created as she is physically. Indeed such a difference is not a unique characteristic of/to life. My difficulty with such attitudes is that these want to make/place everyone in an identical moral and existent human framework.

LOL! True! He’s a media darling now.

At least he’s still pro-life. Hopefully his daughter won’t decide to have an abortion, or that might change too.

So would he accept his son’s behavior if he became a drug addict? At least when people have drug addict kids, they send them to rehab. They don’t go on a crusade to make the whole world embrace dug addiction as something wonderful and wholesole.

“If he was following the Bible, he would love his son, but he wouldn’t support his lifestyle and wouldn’t want to redefine marriage.”

What penalty does the Bible prescribe for homosexuality and disobedient children? Aren’t you being a bit soft?

So this guy never cared enough to contemplate why God thinks homosexual behavior is wrong.

Either that or he is just a coward who is a afraid to have a heart-to-heart talk with his son.

Spot on. His original stance was a fake. Nobody who believed in marriage would change like that.

So, let me get this straight. His Biblical beliefs made him against gay marriage. His son comes out so the father changes his beliefs and goes against the churhes’ teachings and now supports gay marriage. So, if his other son went out and molested and killed a 9 year old child whould Portman’s feelings on those laws change, too? Or pick any of the ten commandments. Thou shalt not murder. If his gay son kills someone does the father’s beliefs about murder change?

I didn’t know God told us we only had to follow the commandments approved by our children.

Aah, BS.

His son ain’t gay, just confused on a social issue that he is trying to align himself with.

I worry about all the people who have suddenly “found themselves gay” and wonder about the suicide rate when they realize they’ve been playing a role not well suited for them, after years of denying themselves the pleasure of the opposite sex.

I got gay friends but, I like chicks, most of em.

They smell better, their softer, love those soft hairs on the nape of their neck, painted fingernails, hint of perfume and I could go on and on and on....

I don't know if that's necessarily true. There may well be politicians who do not use their family members to justify supporting homosexual marriage. I have a sister who is homosexual, but I don't support homosexual marriage.

I understand that this issue can cause dissension in a family, but one must do what is right, and this senator has made the wrong choice.

I know someone who “came out” about a year ago as gay, not bi. Mysteriously they broke up wither their current GF and now have another one.

One of the downstream results of the deconstruction of marriage, sex and gender (and that´s what this is) is that it will become illegal to even advocate for, or try to strengthen, real marriage.

Exaggerating? Not at all. They´ve already shut down Catholic Adoption Services in IL, MA, and CA because they wouldn´t place kids in homosexual domestic arrangements.

They´ve made it a crime to counsel a minor towards normal gender identity/sexual orientation, even if both the minor and his parents have requested help in strengthening normal psychosexual development.

They´re penalizing anyone involved in a wedding, marriage, or family related business if they don´t cater to sexual deviancy.

Gender confusion in very young children is not even being recognized as a problem: it´s a desired feature, even a proud achievement of the new revolutionary gender system!

Who´s it going to hurt?

It´s getting harder and harder to find anyone it isn´t going to hurt.

Watch.

College guys rarely feign being gay. That’s more common among college girls: LUGs (lesbian until graduation). In part it seems they do it so as to be able to play the field (with guys) without being called sluts. Also, a lot of guys find lesbian shenanigans alluring, and LUGs (and “lipstick lesbians,” too) are often angling for male attention. Women, by contrast, rarely find it titillating to watch male homosexuals make out. It’s an odd difference between the sexes and one I can’t explain.
