Republican senator reverses his opposition to gay marriage after his 21-year-old son comes out

A respected Republican senator has announced he is reversing his stance against gay marriage after his 21-year-old son came out to him and his wife.

Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican considered as a running mate by the Romney campaign, said the discovery that his son Will, 21, was gay had given him a 'new perspective' and understanding of why equal opportunities matter.

Will, a junior at Yale University, came out to his politician father and mother, Jane, two years ago, The Plain Dealer reports.

Portman, who backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, says since his son's announcement he has been reconsidering his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

He said he had spent some time speaking to his church in Cincinnati and former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is gay.

Today he wanted to officially and publicly reverse his political position on the issue.

'It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,' Portman told the local paper.

'The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue.'

He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution' and he realized his son's sexuality 'wasn't a choice'.

He said his son had not exerted any influence on him politically but supported his new position and 'encouraged' him.

Our actions are as imprinted on our personal history as any tattoo.

Unfortunately, there is no laser-removal program for our actions.

Not that our actions cannot be forgiven and wiped clean with God through the blood of Jesus Christ, but as a society we are condoning thoughtless, impulsive, ‘hip’ behavior that leads to actions that most will regret with maturity and the turning away from the Self and other childish ways should bring.

As we are finding with the emotional and psychological trauma that women past midlife are now suffering from the abortions they chose, so we may find a generation living with a mountain of regret for actions they cannot undo.

In my opinion, in today's version of the prodigal, the prodigal has no need to return to his father, he merely sends the old man a text, informing him he's gay and tells him to put more money in his account.

He adds, he'll bring his latest lover home for a meet & greet at Thanksgiving, if he has time!

The old man texts his son back asking, "which bank R U using now?" Adding, "Ur mom & I can't wait 2 see U & Leslie!"
Oh, this is too good. I think you've nailed it... -lol- (at your composition, not the actual sin of it all)...

Whenever Libs try and hit with their psycho babble concerning homosexuality; about it being a beautiful, loving, caring union between two men, I reply with one word:

SODOMY!

It will never be normal; it will never be beautiful; it will never be loving! It is a perversion of the highest order, and I will never join the chorus in celebrating this sick practice. I'll leave that for Holly-weird and the Politically Correct among us.

he should ask who molested his son.

Love the sinner, hate the sin. That’s what it boils down to.

"So if he caught he effing the family dog would he drop his opposition to beastiality?"

Of course! After all, doesn't God want dogs, goats and pigs to experience a loving relation? The justice of God, to Portman and many moderns, is nothing more than a vague feeling of self-satisfaction. Just Do It!

Very few politicians have core beliefs, they are actors, who play a role that gives them the best chance to get elected.

Sounds like he "evolved" on the issue. Actually, sounds more like he saw polling data in Ohio that said homo "marriage" is all the rage.

Indeed, I expect we'll be seeing more and more of the GOP elite making these statements as the polls continue to move. That is, after all, what they care about.

Portman, traitor to the nation.

If he wants to stab AMerica in the back, he should have switched parties to the Demmunists first.

Not true. They make it seem that way. The numbers have always hovered around 2%. They want everyone think otherwise. Every family may have a family member who was sexually assaulted by a homo or butch lesbo. Those numbers will start climbing oncethey get the green light because of all these homo friendly laws passed by sorry politicians.

sadly, the homosexual abnormality doesn't lend itself to "long" happy "marriages....

they are not like heteros....their drives are different...although, I'm sure one could find life long partners, but they are the exception not the rule, IMO anyway...

just let them marry though...let them pay the marriage penalty....let them have the same responsibilities as real married people...like having to pay bills for each other, etc...

since "marriage" is not really "marriage" anymore, I predict that as a govt sanctioned institute, it will die a slow death....

it'll be up to the Churches to have marriages.......maybe it should have been that way from the start...

give up on preventing gay marriage....like abortion, those who are fierce against it must live their lives accordingly....the AMish and Mennonites have lived well in this corrupt society and I think we're all going to have to learn that too.....

there are changes going on like a huge rock rolling downhill.....we can't stop it...but we can move out of the way from being crushed....

true conservatives should have basic govt tenets....strong defense, balanced budgets with small govt, and borders that actually are borders...

now that the sheeple idiotic voters in my state legalizes weed, and gay marriage, all I got to say is at least make tax money on the deal....

Who exactly do you think approves Supreme Court justices other than Senators? The last thing conservatives need is a pro-gay marriage Senator involved in that process.

There is no scenario where I ever vote for a politician that supports gay marriage. We can head to outright communism or, preferably, a civil war before I'd do that.

Portman must be defeated in the next primary. I don't even care if Republicans lose the seat if that is what it takes to rid the party of politicians that support gay marriage.
