Update...(for Wednesday...I typed it last night, previewed, and didn’t hit post). Today Thursday was a zoo. I don’t have it in me to write in up tonight...

I spent most of the day, Wednesday, at the hospital. The Chaplain came in the morning, and what a nice lady. I’m on my way back shortly with completed paperwork for the Providence Horizon House facility. The nurse came in yesterday and we chatted.

Horizon House is an “assisted care” facility, with 2 beds set aside for hospice care. Neither Medicare, nor Aetna pays for assisted living, but BOTH pay for hospice, altho both ONLY see “assisted living”. I’m still trying to figure out how this is going to work. (Something for everyone to think about now!) I’m hoping that something in the billing will get each to at least pay something.

Early afternoon the harp lady, licensed theraputic musician (I thot about you, ML), came by and I asked for a couple hymns. My folks used to sing in the choir, and it was beautiful...I completely lost it.

I think I may end up at the Horizon House to talk to an intake person (I did and he was transferred about 5p Thursday).

Home for a couple hours to talk to my Mom about the day and paperwork and then back to the hospital. His nurse said he had gotten “non-angelic”...flailing all over and trying to get the covers off, and rip off the gown. They calmed him with morphine. I held his hand for a couple more hours and when I told him I was leaving, he opened his eyes and was “home”. As I told him Mom loved him and each of the kids by name loved him he acknowledges each with a long eye blink. I called the nurse and she got ice and he took about a dozen or more little pieces of ice and a few spoons of water. Then I told him my sister wanted a picture (she reminded me earlier in the day that my new camera takes pictures) and I told him to smile and he tried.

Thank you all for the prayers.

How very hard for you Kathy.

I’m so glad your parents have you to assist them in their final years.

Praying for you all a lot.

~

I’m sorry about the hospice/assisted live and the billing. Not surprised, though as I’ve been following the lead up to Obamacare and Obamacare itself for years now. It affects us now and will affect us even more in the future.

Good morning (or whenever you get time to read it) and good night Ma ((HUGS))

Prayers continue for you and your mom, and for safe and easy passage for your dad.

FYI - About 7 years ago, when Mr. Beachy and I downgraded to smaller house and began our road to "being debt-free" I canceled my life insurance and got LongTerm Care policies instead. We'd heard how a nursing home or assisted living could wipe out your assets. We figured we'd have enough money in the savings (after paying off debts) to pay for a funeral (which is a lot cheaper than years in nursing home), when the time came, but if something happened to one or the other which required assistance, we didn't want that expense to drain our finances...my mother has several aunts who are in the mid 90s. My dad's mother was in assisted living for 10 years - give or take a few years.

I think if people can afford it they should have the LongTerm Care (not cheap). If however they have a large amount of debt, the life insurance may be best to protect surviving family. Anyhoo, just FYI for everyone reading it. In the current environment we cannot and should not depend on the government programs to take care of us.
