Update on Carnival Dream March 14, 2013- 10:45 am

The Carnival Dream has a technical issue with the ship’s backup emergency diesel generator which our engineering team is currently working on. Yesterday, during regularly scheduled testing of the ship’s emergency diesel generator, a malfunction occurred. At no time did the ship lose power and the ship’s propulsion systems and primary power source was not impacted. The ship is at dock in St. Maarten. All guests are safe and comfortable. There were periodic interruptions to elevators and restroom services for a few hours last night. However, all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12.30am.

While personnel continue to work on the technical issue we are making arrangements to fly all guests home via private charter flights and scheduled flights from St. Maarten. Guests on the current voyage will receive a refund equivalent to three days of the voyage and 50 percent off a future cruise.

We are also cancelling the ship's next voyage which is scheduled to depart on Saturday, March 16. Guests scheduled to sail on this cruise will receive a full refund and 25 percent off a future seven-day cruise. Guests who re-book will have their current rate protected on the future sailing. Additionally, any non-refundable transportation related expenses will be reimbursed.

Yesterday was a scheduled port of call visit to St. Maarten. Guests were able to spend the full day in port and have the option of continuing to do so until their scheduled return home. All of the ship's activities and facilities are fully operational.

We are very sorry for this disruption to our guests' vacation plans and extend our sincere apologies. We look forward to welcoming them back on another Carnival cruise.

The Carnival Dream was on the last leg of a seven-day cruise and was docked in St. Maarten when the technical problem arose. The ship is based in Port Canaveral, Fla.

“The Carnival Dream was on the last leg of a seven-day cruise and was docked in St. Maarten”

I can think of worse places to be stranded.

Some vacation getaway, packed into a sardine can with 4000 strangers for a week or more.

With a competent engineering staff and quality equipment these problems are about as rare as an honest democrat.

These tightwads are scrimping in areas they should not be.

Just remember, carnival is owned by P&O lines. They own and operate several cruise lines. Princess etc. Just because it's not “carnival” doesn't necessarily mean it will be problem free. Having said that, I've been on many cruises and always had an enjoyable trouble free trip. I think the media does with cruise stories like they do flying, they only report the bad news and ignore the vast majority of problem free travel.

Was on the Carnival Liberty several years ago and watched the Dream come in with steering problems, tugs had to be used to get her docked. Went back to my cruise pics and verified that it was the Dream. Waved to the people on board as we left, don’t know if they got her fixed, I guess they did never heard anything on the news.

Typical of most management today. Save $1 today and don't worry about losing $100 tomorrow because of it. As long as “tomorrow” happens after they move to another company. Much like our government...

One more incident within 1-2 years and Carnival is toast.

See my post #6, the others would probably keep it going. Even if carnival does go under they would probably just change the line name and keep going.

That was my thought, too. There have been enough of these to make me wonder if capital maintenance is low priority.

From the sound of it, The Carnival Dream “IS” on it’s “Last Legs!”
Their motto S/B “ travel on us at your own risk.”

They used to offer excursions there, where you could "race" 12-meter sailboats, the same kind used on the America's Cup races. You could you could actively "grind" (work the winches that trim the sails), or just stand by and watch, as the boat runs a short course against another boat. I even got to man the helm (steer the sailboat) on the way back to anchor.

Was one of my favorite all-time experiences.

Yeah, from what I hear this not the first time its had “technical issues”. Ive been on a couple of carnival cruises (not the dream though). I had a good time but its all about what kind of experience your looking for. carnival is pretty much a party line. We prefer Princess, a step or two up in the experience, service pretty much everything cost is a little more also but worth it IMO.
