Yes. The one from the WH cost $277,000 and the one the media made, not so much.

(I tried to post this earlier.)

One, you have a “fat” ‘artist’ making 6 figure on the one job; the other, not so much.

“That said, what would happen to all the newly unemployed calligraphers? “

Let ‘em paint houses.

I've got at least a half dozen calligraphic fonts installed on the computer now.

Outsource it to a Chinese printing company.

Yeah, sure it will look like a misspelled Chinese menu, but Obama's people can't read anyway.

Goodness, the presidency is Americas royal class. They were intended by our founders to live like monarchs, and to be spared no luxury.

And as much as i dislike Obama, in the last few decades, the presidency has turned into a bizzarre sicko cult that would make most monarchs in world history blush.

Thnking back to the Ike, Truman, era one can see that Presidents were merely seen as high office holders. My dad was working in a Missouri train station after Truman left office. Late one evening actually talked to him for a few minutes as he waited for a train. Said there wasnt a swarm of SS men, etc.

The more regal they behave, the less they identify with the very nation that entrusted them with a job.

Mrs. 40 is great at calligraphy and I can definitely spot her work as compared to that which was done by a computer. But as good as she is, I'm sure even she would not think her work would be worth $277,000 taxpayer dollars.

She just completerd 200 invitations for a friend's daughter's upcoming wedding and was paid $250. Of course that was done for a friend, she would certainly charge more had it not been.

” Many foreign leaders would find the typically-American preference for informality disrespectful, which could threaten negotiations before they begin,” wrote Tim Flavin. “State dinner invitations should not look like they were laser-printed on stationery from Target.”
If that’s all it takes to threaten negotiations then I consider it a problem.

Yes, I’m sure someone would avoid a state dinner because they didn’t like the font on the letter.

Blow your nose on an invitation and send it to the French President and he’ll think you’ve invited him to an escargot feed.

Some things should be hand lettered on parchment: Constitutions; Bills of Rights; memorial lists for servicemen .... Other things, (e.g. invitations to dinner at the W.H., sent to big donors) don’t need hand lettering.

I bet you could put together a network of amateur calligraphers who’d do this work for nothing, just for the thrill and honor of it.

I understand that many sources are saying this person makes 277k. If that is true, this person is NOT a government worker. Even SES-5 doesn’t make that much. This person has to be a contractor.

Was thinking he or she wasn’t a GS anything. I bet the WH re: Moochelle hired the person.

Oh. Thanks. Makes more sense. If they are Protocol then the deserve every penny. If the literally only do invitation...I am not sure. I was a Flag Writer to an Admiral and had to do invitations for events by computer in nice font and even that was a pain. Lol
