Billboard in Austin, Texas, Stirs Controversy with Latino Immigrant Message - 'Rise Up My People'

A new billboard in Austin, Texas, is raising eyebrows and controversy (video below).

The billboard depicts people with clenched fists and flags raised over an image of the U.S.-Mexico border and a heart emblazoned with the Mexican flag logo.

The words on the billboard "Arriba Mi Gente" translate to "Up My People" or "My People Arrive."

The Austin Visual Arts Association and Reagan Outdoor Advertising put up 10 pieces of art on billboards on major highways across Austin.

According to BigPicture.net, “Arriba Mi Gente” was selected from more than 100 entries.

“This has been an exciting opportunity to bring together the extraordinary artistic talent across our community and put it on display for all of Austin to see and enjoy,” says Billy Reagan, president of Reagan Outdoor Advertising.

The artist of the billboard Nancy Guevara said the billboard is about the "border and border culture ... I want to inform people and empower people about the culture ... I want Mexican-Americans to know that it is okay to speak Spanish ... we need to be proud of our roots and fight for our rights here."

>”The words on the billboard “Arriba Mi Gente” translate to “Up My People” or “My People Arrive.”<

‘Arriba mi gente’ means ‘Up [literally] my people’, roughly equivalent to ‘Viva mi gente’, Long live my people. The translation ‘My People Arrive’ must be a Freudian slip :-), or else Spanglish. In standard Spanish it has no such meaning.

I agree, though, that putting up a picture in the United States of a logo of the Mexican flag with that kind of slogan, along with clinched fists, is very provocative. How does she think Mexicans would like it if that kind of billboard were put in Mexico with an American flag logo, clinched fists, and “Long live Americans”?

> Now, understand there have always been Tejanos and Gringos in Texas and lots of Tejanos and Mexicans (self identified) served in the US Military.

I served in the Army with Hispanics from the Southwest who were among my best friends. I have no sympathy with this kind of stuff, though.

Yeah, go back to Mexico and “rise up” against the thugs running the place and the cartels that are destroying the place. Yes, take you country back.

If you eff THIS one up you will be in exactly the same situation you ran away from.

You folks are morons.

Nor do I, nor do any of my Tejano friends.

By the way, my son-in-law is 1/2 Hispanic.

He is native Texan. A corporate attorney. A strong conservative Republican.

And a great husband to my daughter and father to my grandson.

He has nothing to do with the La Raza Rabble.

Correction: I see that the verb ‘arribar’ can be used to mean ‘arrive’ (which is usually ‘llegar’), especially for ships reaching port. So I suppose ‘Arriba mi gente’ could be a kind of pun with two meanings. (Sorry. I haven’t used Spanish much for decades, so my memory of it isn’t as good as it used to be.)

If you want to speak spanish, carry your ass back to Mexico as far as I'm concerned.

If you're so proud of your culture, why did you come here? Your culture is what you fled, you piece of shiite!

Too many cowards afraid to fix what's wrong in their country of origin and instead move their "culture" here to pollute this country and leave it a cesspool like that from which they left.

This type of mentality cannot last long without civil war, IMO.

We'll never know how Mexicans would like it. It would never be permitted in Mexico.

I believe in the 1st amendment. So I'd like to rent an opposing billboard that says...”Rise up and take your happy a$$e$ back to Mexico if you don't like it here.”

But I fear we are fighting a losing battle.

It really is San Fransicko Southwest.

Not yet. But they are relocating here from California. They ate that carcass. Time for new meat.

After I read the foreigners got public schooled Texas girls into burkahs, I am not surprised to see LaRaza rise up with it’s stinky wet dream.
