Skip to comments.House GOP Leaders: We Can Pass Gun Control, Immigration, Without Republican Support
Posted on 03/11/2013 5:46:17 AM PDT by Timber Rattler
With more and more conservatives in the House rebelling against John Boehners increasingly questionable Speakership, Republican House leadership is now moving to quash in-house concerns by reaching across the aisle for support. Leadership is moving in the wake of a surprising move by 16 House Republicans to vote against a Republican leadership-crafted closed rule on a government funding bill. The rule was designed to limit amendments to the government funding bill, but some House conservatives, concerned over the Boehner teams refusal to consider a floor vote on an amendment to defund Obamacare implementation, bucked Boehner on the rule.
After undergoing that unpleasant shock, House leadership hasnt responded by listening to the concerns of the more conservative members of its caucus. Instead, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said on Sunday that he would be open to ramming through bills without the support of a majority of his own Republican caucus. Not just on small bills. On issues like immigration and gun control, McCarthy said, hed be open to taking rogue Republicans across the aisle to work with Democrats.

Not yet. They still need DOZENS of Democrats to support them, at least on gun control, as those Democrats know that a gun control vote will mean the end of their Congressional career - and most of them plan to be there a LOT LONGER.
I think this is TOTALLY a bluff, to get Republicans to buy-in on Amnesty. They already know the gun control issue is lost for them.
Not that I have any faith the ability to right things through elections anymore to begin with, but that’s the green light for a huge tear away of Republican party members to a 3rd party or formation of one nevertheless.
Why did they ever reelect the bonehead to the Speakership position. The guy has done nothing except spit upon the conservatives while basking in his sun tan booth sipping Black Jack on the rocks. These guys don’t wish to be the anti dems, they would rather just be the loyal collaboration, kind of a Vichy party.
We need to totally dump the RINO GOPe.
Leadership?....what Leadership?... did bonehead even know Gramnesty arranged the little gathering with Odungo last week? Were being sold a dead squirrel and told it’s a mink.
Vichyites, Quislingites, Nottobetrustedeverites......
Call girls have more integrity & self respect. And they at least charge for being serviced. Geez.......!
Not with John Boehner as Speaker. Boehner should have lost his position in the House elections ago. It's over for the GOP. The democrats know they will regain the House in 2014. And you can thank John Boehner for that.
Its clear that this is what the House is doing,
Boehner will pass whatever Reid sends him. There are no alternative GOP bills in the House that can get majority GOP vote, and not one of them challenged Bohner by running against him, instead they will just vote their 'no's as the Reid crap passes to Os desk.
So this is the sad state of affairs that we are stuck with.
What you mean “WE” blue man.
They re-elected Boehner because no one else would take the job.
This will start the demise of the ‘GOP controlled’ House, culminating into a Democrat victory in 2014. When the Republicans won in 2010 and they decided to elected Jon Boehner, I knew that it was the beginning of the end.
No worries. Nancy Pelosi will have it next year.
McCain/Boehner 2016 - leading the GOP into the future!
(Can you imagine what an utter failure that would be?)
The GOPe is no friend to the success of conservatives. The GOPe is only interested in re-election and being part of the political class.
It is time to fire them all.
Not one of them stood up to challenge Boehner and offer an alternative, they will just vote their symbolic ‘no’s and Reids crap passes.
Ryan will come out with another symbolic budget resolution that once again repeals O-care.
John Boehner has left nothing (ABSOLUTELY NOTHING) for us to support. He should have stepped down from that postion long ago. Obama will have a super majority during the 2nd half of his second term.
“... by reaching across the aisle for support.”
Nothing new there.
"In a statement to The Hill, McCarthy spokesperson Mike Long said: "Whip McCarthy strongly supports returning to regular order to bring legislation to the floor that has the support of a majority of the majority. Insinuation to the contrary is completely false.""
I hope not, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
