How the White House Silenced Gun Control Groups

President Barack Obama’s gun control agenda is looking more doomed by the day, but gun control advocates still haven’t said a word to complain.

That’s no accident.

The White House knew its post-Newtown effort would require bringing key gun control groups into the fold. So the White House offered a simple arrangement: the groups could have access and involvement, but they’d have to offer silence and support in exchange.

The implied rules, according to conversations with many of those involved: No infighting. No second-guessing in the press. Support whatever the president and Vice President Joe Biden propose. And most of all, don’t make waves or get ahead of the White House.

In exchange: a voice in the discussions, a role in whatever final agreement is made and weekly meetings at the White House with Biden’s chief of staff, Bruce Reed — provided they don’t discuss what happens there.

“The implication is very, very strong when they are calling these meetings and we are all sitting there,” said one regular attendee, who like the others, would only speak about them anonymously. “It’s not like they’re being bullies, it’s them bringing everybody together, not being one-off meetings with groups that might be interested in things other than the bottom line, not providing the forum for that kind of stuff.”

You’re glad to be in the room,” another participant in the Reed meetings said. “Because this issue has been dead for a long time and now there’s a real opportunity there.”

For the White House, which wouldn’t comment about Reed’s meetings or the relationships with the gun control groups, this strategy was about ensuring the president had a united front as he pushed for new laws — and that he won’t shoulder the blame if and when the negotiations fail.

How the White House Silenced Gun Control Groups.
Blindfolded them and had them stand in front of a wall? I Don't think so.

Hey gun control guys. I realize how you guys must not be very fond of our founding fathers and you probably hate the Constitution for the very same reason. BUT this is the thing. On any list of things that are fundamentally important, high priority being number 2 on the list means in practical purposes, FUGGGEHHTABOUTIT. No. 2 is not going away, EVER.
If I were you I'd make peace with myself and take the gay rights in your state, marriage, equal rights and stuff as having got done the damnest liberal thing you will ever be able to take credit for and call it a day. And if it really, really keeps on ruining your day, listen to our great Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Vader, (yeah, with a "V") Ginsburg who doesn't like our Constitution much either, preferring South Africa and Egypt's to ours. So go ahead and live a little. Relocate to either the has been, economically downtrodden South Africa or the country that put the Spring in Arab, where you can get yourself a child bride if you know the right people or where if you get tired of her and you can text divorce her in a matter of seconds. Stay for awhile and get back to us about your experiences, especially about the Egyptian Constitution. That is, if you CAN MAKE IT BACK.

BUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

Translation: I, Barak Hussein Obama II, am Emperor, and therefore get all the credit — unless it fails and then someone else gets all the blame!

So, liberals claimed Cheney broke the law by involving representatives of the oil industry in discussions of energy policy.

But Obama can coordinate with the press and activist groups all they want.

“It’s not like they’re being bullies....”

Oh no, of course not, no way. That’s why denying that came to your mind so quickly “Anon”.

It shows that the groups are actually more interested in access to power than to trying to advance their agenda.

Amusing, but typical. Especially on the Left side of the political spectrum.

This strategy was about getting and keeping Benghazi out of the press cycle and keeping white liberals on the plantation. Same Sex Marriage is also a part of this strategy. Keystone is going through and Obama needs as much political cover as possible.

He can blame angry, white clingers for all his failures and white liberals will lap it up: He tried.

This is a strong strategy on Obama’s part. He can get away with it because the press gives him a pass but they don’t give republicans a pass when they do it.

no dounbt the left will do as they always do and make a group , call it gun rights but then push an anti gun law or steps to banning guns and then be presented by the lkeft as a offical gun group so the left can mention how gun groups are on board with them and their anti gun laws

It’s very effective and you cannot entirely blame the MSM because it is something we refuse or are incapable of doing ourselves. We do not seem to be able to work behind the scenes towards goals - it’s always an in-your-face, no compromise stance, and it does not work. From pro life, to pro gun, to maintaining religious values and traditions in society, we always put unpopular positions front and center, alienating people, instead of using some stealth and good tactics. I’m not saying we should compromise on our beliefs, but try and find more subtle and effective ways of implementing them. Politics is the art of the possible.

If something gets to Obama’s desk to sign then Obama can tell them it worked,.
If nothing gets to Obama’s desk then they will look like suckers.’

Obama called for a whole list of gun controls and now they will be lucky if anything passes. Why is that not his failure?

Last night maddow equated the NRA to the cigarette lobby of the 1990s and guns to cigarettes, she also claimed that neither had/has grass roots support and are both just corporatiions staging grass roots support.
She is keeping the flame going for Obama.

That’s one campaign pledge he said his administration would be the very best at and it seems he has overwhelmingly kept his promise on this issue as you’ve said to being the most transparent administration ever so you’ve got to give him credit at least for that........
.........................................................
Oh, wait a minute. Hm. He said his administration would have the greatest “transparency”....not that it would be the most transparent......

Oh, never mind. :-)

“...Last night maddow equated the NRA to the...”

Madcow and her ilk can live in their little fantasy world and whine and bitch all they want. Likewise, “gun control” groups can do the same.

At the end of the day, there are over 100+ million gun owners in this country. At least a third of that number are hardcore, never-give-up your-guns former and current military, LEO, etc., with extremely scary skillsets.

30 million or so hardcore 2nd Amendment Patriots, determined to preserve a Right that people died for.

“Come and take them”? Good luck with that. Bloodbath for all sides concerned.

Mathematics is a scary thing to fascists...especially when the numbers aren’t on their side.

F*** ‘em.

nope...it has been all misdirection...

the 'assault weapons' argument that frankenfeinstein had in her file cabinet successfully mobilized all the resistance to the center...

the flank is stealthily being hit with *enhanced [cough] background checks...of which there will be more than a couple rin-o-p signatures to possibly move it over the top...

all in the name of *doing something* and being compromising...

Are you saying we cant trust Mccain and Grahamnesty?

Maybe they can use the same computer software to process and register gun background checks as they do for amnesty and path to citizenship after immigration reform.

Will those 'instant' background checks be 'instant' if Obama furloughs the background checkers?

“...enhanced [cough] background checks...”

Which is outlawing private transfers...

Which is de facto registration...

Which is what they wanted all along.

The AW ban was redirection. Get all the gunnies freaking out about their AR15s while we pass the real goal: registration for later confiscation.
