Michigan Democratic Sen. Carl Levin announced Thursday he will retire at the end of 2014.
The chairman of the Armed Services Committee, first elected in 1978, is the longest-serving senator in Michigan history and will turn 80 before Election Day next year.
In a statement, Levin said the decision not to seek another term was “extremely difficult.”

Murdoch. He was a good conservative but a lousy candidate. The “best conservative who can win” is better than the best conservative who is a weak, lousy, dumb candidate. Conservatism is smart, not stupid.
They are called State Legislatures not State Congresses.
And the Governor isn’t popular so he won’t be on any help.
I don’t know why a top tier candidate wouldn’t be interested in the first open seat in 20 years. In the 2nd midterm of a rat President with under 50% approval.
Amash running is fine with me as long as he loses the primary and is replaced in the House with a conservative Republican.
I think three people have a legitimate shot. Mike Rogers, Terri Lynn Land, and Candice Miller. Miller would be a real nose-holding vote for me, but she has won statewide in the past. Mike Rogers was briefly my congressman for two years when I was in the old 8th District. He flipped a seat from D-R despite Gore winning it. He’s a very good campaigner, as is Terri Land.
When the time comes, I’d gladly micturate on his grave but I won’t paeon him!

We had several of these last go round. If we don’t do a better job of recruiting we’ll end up with another Akin and a loss.

Justin Amash is one of the few who tried to change the leadership in the house. In his election the ruling class Pub’s gave him nothing. They even tried to beat him in the primary with a quote” Jerry Ford Repub” He still won his election fighting a strong candidate who had 5 times as much money as him. He appeals to young people and is principled. Have you read his Facebook page? He explains every vote. Mike is also a great principled man.

there is a problem in Michigan Synder is a RINO and he will help whomever is the establishment candidate to win. Being in the UP of MI, the Senators in Dc do not give a rats backside about this region. We have Benishek in the House, a tea party candidate but there are people up here whom are unhappy with him.

1. When did Republicans start supporting hate-crime legislation? Hate-crime bills, like H R 3541, are apparently okay if they have to do with a baby’s gender but not okay if they have to do with a person’s skin color or sexual orientation. Or maybe they’re okay if it’s an election year and Republicans are trying to make the President look like he doesn’t care about women. I am appalled and outraged t...hat we would take an issue as sacred as life and use it so cynically as a political weapon.
Republicans, and especially conservatives, should oppose abortion. Period. H R 3541 criminalizes the MOTIVE for getting an abortion. In other words, it keeps all abortions legal except those obtained for the “wrong” reasons. But ALL abortions are wrong. And criminalizing motive makes this simply another hate crime. Literally the only difference between a legal and an illegal abortion under the bill is whether the “abortion is sought based on the sex or gender of the child.”
The bill also shockingly makes it a crime for a medical or mental health professional NOT to turn in someone who they SUSPECT of having committed this thought crime. They can be thrown into prison for a year if they don’t “report known or suspected violations . . . to appropriate law enforcement authorities.” Free societies do not criminalize inaction.
I’m pro-life, and I think all abortion should be illegal. But Congress should not criminalize thought. And this bill won’t stop a single abortion if it becomes law. Every person seeking an abortion simply will sign a form stating her motive is not the sex of the baby. Those of us who are pro-life should demand more from Congress. While we waste time on stuff like this, genuine legislation to protect life is ignored

As I said with respect to last year’s bill, I cannot support an intelligence authorization when Congress and the President have shown no willingness to repeal, or even amend the worst provisions of, the USA PATRIOT Act. Furthermore, the bill funds CIA operations that likely include the President’s “kill list,” which identifies persons—including American citizens—that the President has ordered to be assassinated. Bingo. Unlike many in Congress, I don’t attack my colleagues personally. I just explain every vote on Facebook. These simple explanations upset many in the political class who want to avoid public scrutiny.
