The Difference Between Business and Government

I own and operate a business that provides services to industrial companies on a national scale. I have employees that interact with key client decision makers daily. Over the past six years, the ebb and flow of the business cycles and economy have forced us to cut expenses and some of our talented personnel on several occasions.

Despite our losses in people, I consider it my responsibility to absolutely ensure our levels of customer service and quality of interaction. I make it my daily goal to never allow our customers to detect any change in our abilities. Despite revenue shortfall, reduced employee hours, and cost cutting of our internal support systems, I will not allow our customers to experience any reduction of service from us.

But look at the news coming from the people in government that we expect to be professional in their behavior toward their customers, the public at large.

Federal government officials are running around announcing everything they cannot do. The White House tour department is curtailing as well as claims of same coming from the TSA, USDA, Dept. of Education, ICE, and the office of the Attorney General. The article below states that the mission seems to be to reduce services and announce pending pain for the American public.

If any of my department heads told me or our customers that their levels of service were being reduced due to our internal budget restrictions, they would be assured of a change in their employment status.

It is absolutely the basic foundation of mature and rational management to make the very best with the assets and resources available, and to never issue blame to others in the company.

Why is this not the cornerstone of our government management?

The federal government is a monopoly. This is an example of what happens when the customers have no choice.

Federal government officials are running around announcing everything they cannot do.

Only for now. Usually they run around claiming that they can and should do everything, nobody else can possibly do it right.

There is a world of difference between government and private business. Inefficient private business shuts down or straightens up, inefficient government plows more cash in no matter what. It’s a given.

By the broad definition they like to use, this effort amounts to a form of terrorism.

PeaRidge, my friend, from your description of yourself and your company, I am sure you already know the answer to your question. You’re clearly a sharp lad.

Government, for as long back as I can remember, has always cut where it hurt the most, and advertised the fact that it will hurt. It’s how they get their way.

The thugs in control at the moment have taken this strategy to a stratospheric level.

The difference is that you are NOT their customer. You are their tax slave.
