Guess What: Michelle Obama’s Lunch Program Isn’t Kosher for Some Jewish Schools
The Blaze ^ | 3/4/13 | Sharona Schwartz

Posted on 03/05/2013 11:20:00 AM PST by Impala64ssa

Critics of federal school lunch regulations say they waste food and money, that they infringe on an individual’s choice to eat whatever he or she wants, and that they’re not filling enough. Some students are even boycotting cafeteria food.

Now, ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools are finding it difficult to abide by the newly implemented federal school lunch guidelines, providing another example that this one-size-fits-all policy doesn’t “fit all.” That’s because the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act for which First Lady Michelle Obama vigorously advocated requires the serving of certain foods that some might consider non-kosher.

Ultra-Orthodox community leaders are now appealing to the government, asking their schools be given a pass from serving leafy green vegetables, a required menu option linked to their schools continuing to receive federal funding.

The Jewish newspaper The Forward which examined the issue reports:

snip

It is an issue that relatively few in the Jewish community pay much attention to, and given the reluctance of most Jewish groups to negotiate with the federal government over funding, due to their reluctance to ask the government for special preferences tailored to any religious group, ultra-Orthodox activists find themselves alone in the battleground.

Reason #2295 that the school my children attend (and one whose board I sit) accepts no government anything, of any kind. We’re not even non-profit to avoid oversite, even though we are a non-profit.

The government (primarily state and city) putzs still show up and try impose all sorts of crap, even when they expressly have no authority. We have literally had armed secuirty chase them out.

“Leafy green vegetables aren’t Kosher?”

The federally mandated ones have bugs in them.

Insects (excepting certain locusts, I think) are not Kosher.

Interestingly, our tax bill for our school includes property taxes for public schools we do not attend. This money is (allegedly) used for food we do not eat.

I grew up in a very Orthodox Jewish home (no Hostess Twinkies!), and I never even heard of this supposed rule about leafy green vegetables until a few years ago. As far as I can tell, it is something only the most extremely ultra-ultra-Orthodox follow.

Probably not halal either. This dude is clued into the bean eating nation of islam and earlier to the crowd in Indonesia ~ they have moslems there who eat pork.

Actually the obama meals are not suitable for arctic peoples, or those with any one of 5 autoimmune disorders that affect a good 10% of the population.

When you bring in a Chicago community organizer to head up the government science goes out the window!

Regarding green leafy vegetables the reason everybody used to pour hot boiling bacon grease over them is they didn't have microwave ovens. That's the easy way to get rid of the bugs ~ burn 'em, then rinse the veggies.

An alternative way of eating veggies is to feed them to the pigs ~ then trade the pigs to goyem for live chickens.

Yeah, but you can have Carvel and Hydrox (the inventor of the sandwich cookie ripped off by Nabisco/Oreo)!

Unfortunately, Sunshine got bought out by Keebler, and the only way to get Hydrox is as a topping on a Carvel sundae.

Also, in the northeast, you could have gotten Drake’s Creme Fingers (Twinkies rip-off), Ring-Dings, Yodels and Funny Bones. (You can keep the Devil Dogs and Yankee Doodles).

“a required menu option linked to their schools continuing to receive federal funding.”

Why are religious schools receiving federal funding?

There is no limit to the sacrifices this great woman makes for America.

Now that she has solved the dietary issues for the nation's children she has moved on to straighten out the country on proper care and nourishment of our dogs, cats and other pets.

Her concern for the health and well being of all living things is boundless.

“Why are religious schools receiving federal funding?”

Most don’t.

But they actually pay (and generally the parents also pay)property taxes to the state that is confiscated by the feds who turn around (after taking a cut) and use the money for “free” lunch programs.

Some schools decided “we pay for it, we might as well use it.”

The Yeshiva on whose board I sit went through this analysis and decided they wanted nothing to do with the government and just pays the money twice for the benefit of being free of Obama and his minions.

It's true in most places for anybody sending their children anywhere but public schools. It's a sop to the teachers' unions.
