Bipartisan group reaches deal on gun trafficking

A bipartisan group of senators has reached a deal on a bill that would make it a federal crime to buy a gun for someone who isn't legally allowed to own one.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy announced the agreement on the Senate floor Monday evening.

Illegal gun “straw” purchases, made by a buyer on behalf of someone who cannot pass a background check, are often not prosecuted under current law, usually because conducting such a sale yields such a weak penalty.

The new compromise legislation would make the consequences for both straw buyers and sellers far more serious - to the tune of decades in jail.

"Instead of a slap on the wrist or treating this like a paperwork violation, these crimes under our bill would be punishable by up to 25 years in prison," Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said.

Ridiculous. 25 years in jail, as a federal penalty, for a "crime" that has almost no effect on society, while illegal voting is openly encouraged.

How long before this law is used to go after law abiding citizens who buy a gun as a gift? How long before it is used to prosecute law abiding citizens who sell a gun? In Texas the legal threshold to sell a gun privately is to verbally verify that they are a Texas resident and legally allowed to own a gun. The rats can’t wait to use this law to punish people who were lied to.

The biggest gun trafficker in the world is the People’s Republic of China. But since so many of our politicians and power brokers are in bed with them, it’s airbrushed out of the picture like a grainy Soviet era photograph.

Personally, if elected officials feel a need to pass some legislation in the name of gun violence, this is about as good as it gets from my perspective.

I think all the previous proposed laws are dumb and will not reduce gun violence in any significant manner.

This law at least is aimed at strawman purchases, which are already illegal (but hardly every prosecuted). Many folks say lets enforce the existing laws first, and strawman purchases are illegal. But some are saying that the penalties on a strawman purchase are so “light” that they are not worth prosecuting. Well this is calling those folks out, by saying then let's make this a 25 year offense so it will be worth prosecuting.

Yes, 25 years is a little harsh, but look at a recent set of strawmen who were caught running guns to California gangs out of Oregon. I would be happy with them getting 25 years in jail.
