Spending cut showdown threatens Obama's second-term agenda

Just hours after across-the-board spending cuts officially took effect, President Barack Obama pressed Congress on Saturday to work with him on a compromise to halt a fiscal crisis that threatens the economy and his broader domestic policy agenda.

The failure by Obama and Republicans to agree to halt the $85 billion "sequester" cuts virtually guaranteed that fiscal issues would remain center stage in Washington for weeks, crowding out Obama's proposals to reform immigration, tighten gun laws and raise the minimum wage.

The economic effects of the spending cuts may take time to kick in, but political blowback has already begun and is hitting Obama as well as congressional Republicans.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Friday showed neither Republicans nor Obama and his fellow Democrats escaping blame.

Obama's approval rating dropped to 47 percent in a Gallup poll on Friday, down from 51 percent in the previous three-day period measured.

How about this: Sen Grassley and Rep Issa walk up to obama, with a document giving him back his $85 billion. All he has to do is: lift the executive privilege he's giving holder for F&F; DOJ hands over any and every document related to F&F; all the survivors of the attack in Benghazi get whistleblower protection and are interviewed and called to testify; all drone footage, audio recordings, phone calls are made available. When he hands all of that stuff over, he gets what he wants

Republicans should go into the budget meetings with the attitude of, if Democrats in the senate do not present a budget, we are going to cut another 85 billion, this time in entitlements.

Agreed. The Pubs are going to get the blame anyway so they might as well push the envelope.

That is a start, but maybe it is time to attack and eliminate not only useless, but detrimental agencies. I suggest the following as priorities...

EPA
ATF
HLS/TSA
FDA
FEMA
Dept of Education
All Czars and the agencies/depts they head
Dept of Energy
Dept of Agriculture
Dept of Housing & Urban Development
Dept of Commerce
Dept of Interior

We are looking at 2 or 3 Trillion dollars saved annually with the above cuts. And many times that saved in regulatory costs to both business and individuals.

The failure by Obama and Republicans to agree to halt the $85 billion "sequester" cuts...
"The Demwits controlled both houses of Congress for a few years, and continue to control one, but haven't produced a budget since Bush was President." [imaginary lead]

So far, congress has been steadfast.

The proper thing to do is ZERO out the Executive budget for White Hut operations.

Stop paying the salaries of all of the executive staff, and cut off the transportation budget.

the sequester is a cap on spending.

It's not even that good.

It's a slight reduction in the rate of growth. We will still spend more that we did last year.
