Hundreds of thousands march against austerity in Portugal

AFP - Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities Saturday to protest against the government's austerity measures aimed at rescuing the debt-hit eurozone nation.

The rallies were organised by a non-political movement which claimed 500,000 marched in the country's capital and another 400,000 in the main northern city of Porto. There have been no official estimates of the crowds.

But the mood of the crowd was clearly political, calling for new elections with banners declaring "Portugal to the polls!" and "If you fall asleep in a democracy, you wake up in a dictatorship".

Another banner showed a picture of centre-right Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho with the caption: "Today I am in the street, tomorrow it will be you."

Portugal was granted a financial rescue package worth 78 billion euros ($103 billion) in May 2011, in exchange for a pledge to straighten out its finances via austerity measures and economic reforms.

How does one march against austerity?

Does one bitch and moan? And who is to blame? And how will the problem be solved?

Abolish austerity!!

Coming soon to a concentrated Democrat parasite nest (”city”) near you!

All across Europe, the parasites outnumber the hosts.
Congratulations to Europe’s version of America’s Democrats.

(psssst.... Hey Portugese! The socialists you elected to keep you fat and happy have run out of other people’s money.)

Like America's own Democrat party base of moochers, bums, deadbeats, and parasites, they have absolutely no inkling that the "free stuff" they receive from their politicians in exchange for their votes is not simply conjured up out of thin air by government - - it is confiscated at the point of a gun from other people who get up and go to work every day.

Dear Portugal,

Your government has run out of other people’s money.
Earn your own now. Or starve.

Sincerely,

Other People

Reminds me of American union-thugs, who would rather go on strike, refuse to capitulate, and destroy the very company that provides their jobs.

What is the destination of their march? The poorhouse? Who are they hoping to impress? The Germans? After the march their leaders no doubt told them that the Germans will once again subsidize their consumption. Here in America Obama has great faith in China and Bernacke. Soon it will be apparent that those who consume more than they produce cannot be saved by endless subsidies, financial gimmickry and the endless printing of currency.

How soon do you think that will be? (The answer, of course, is: When it is way WAY too late.)

"...teachers, healthcare workers and pensioners..."

Like protesters and rioters against austerity measures in other defaulting countries in southern Europe. Political/regulator class folks try to distract from the fact that it will be them here, too. That's an enormous number of outrageous salaries from the recirculating debt.

They should have cut them off in 2011. Kicking the can down the road just makes the inevitable blowup bigger.

It is already too late.Critical amounts of capital have been squandered on consumption and subsidies. Real poverty, despite the whining of politicians and clueless mindless voters,is the destiny of most of those marchers.

They don’t believe that. They believe that evil rich people are exploiting them. What they don’t understand is that the socialism they crave is actually just the same chocolate covered narcotic that has been killing them slowly and leading them to the abject state of welfare junkies.

Marching and rallying for something less than mediocrity.

Socialism is a loser’s way of life.

“they have absolutely no inkling that the “free stuff””

Even if they knew that their free stuff came from the backs of other people, they wouldn’t care. The entitlement mantality is rampant.
