FONTANA, Calif. (KTLA) — Controversy is heating up in over 14 high-powered, semi-automatic rifles purchased by school police in Fontana.

The $19,000 worth of weaponry was purchased a few months ago by the Fontana Unified School District Police Chief Billy Green.

The rifles were ordered back in October — before the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. — but officials say they hope they’ll prevent any future tragedies.

Some school board members objected to the move at the time, but on Wednesday night, the board voted unanimously in favor of dispatching the rifles.

I’ll give ‘em $500 for all of them. Beats putting them into the shredder. Well, maybe it doesn’t beat it for them. Maybe it’s worth it to them for them to destroy all the value.

Look like pretty standard ARs, nothing exotic. They had to pay more than a grand for each? ... Someone’s relative was ‘hooked up’ don’tchaknow!

Someone should ask KTLA why these aren’t assault rifles, and if they aren’t, where can us regular citizens buy them...

“High Powered Rifles”...you gotta love the media headline writers! I might go along with “High Capacity Rifles”, but I think they should be at least .308 to be called “high-powered”! What would the press call a .500 NE elephant gun? “Really-Really High Powered”?!?! Ha!

They are simply ‘patrol rifles’ with ‘standard magazines’. Ask any police department.

Modern solution to an eternal problem - in days gone by, a simple rap across the knuckles with a ruler worked just fine.

We’re so much more enlightened now.

I’ve seen the kids that go to the Fontana schools. They need this weaponry!
