House passes Violence Against Women Act after GOP version defeated

Washington (CNN) -- Struggling again with an issue important to women and minority groups, House Republicans on Thursday failed to pass their version of a new Violence Against Women Act and then split over a Senate version that won approval with unanimous Democratic support.

The votes reflected an emerging political reality in the GOP-led House, with a minority of Republicans joining Democrats to pass legislation supported by the public, including increasingly influential demographics such as Hispanic Americans.

By a vote of 166-257, the GOP version failed to win a majority after almost 90 minutes of debate. The House then voted 286-138 to pass the Senate version, with 87 Republicans joining all 199 Democrats to provide majority support.

Originally passed in 1994 and reauthorized since, the act provides support for organizations that serve domestic violence victims. Criminal prosecutions of abusers are generally the responsibility of local authorities, but the act stiffened sentences for stalking under federal law.

Supporters credit the act with sharply reducing the number of lives lost to domestic violence over the past two decades.

Last year, the House and Senate were unable to compromise on another extension of the act, with Republicans opposing Democratic attempts to specify inclusion of native Americans, undocumented immigrants and lesbian, transgender and bisexual women.

However, exit polling showed President Barack Obama won strong support among women and Latino voters in the November election that also strengthened the Democratic majority in the Senate and weakened the Republican majority in the House.

Republicans then changed their stance and agreed to bring up the measure in the new Congress as long as they could offer their own version.

We should create a bill that is called the “The Adorable Kitten Preservation and Protection against gun violence Act”

In it the Federal government give 10 dollars to every animal shelter on the first page and oh by the way ends all welfare program in the other 10,000 pages in it...

Knowing how stuipid Most the Congress Critters are the damn thing would probably pass with votes by the Dims and the RINOs...

Who would be against poor little kittens....

There are some very dangerous portions of this bill.
It is now a federal felony to even utter loud or uncomfortable words to a woman.
Native American law enforcement officers can even arrest and charge people accused of uncomfortable speech toward NA women, even off of tribal lands.

Under this law you can lose your right to own a gun because of something you said.

This violates the first and second amendment.

You're no longer free to express yourself (censorship) , and if you do you lose your right to self defense.

The Republican party likes this idea.

Register the gun Owners... Check

They send a mintory woman to your doow from a federal agency to talk to you about said guns, you tell her to go to hell...

Instant Felony, guns get taken 10 mintes later by federal agents following this “provacateur” around.....

They will probably take your kids and send them to an indoctrination camp as well...

It amazes me how many existing laws haven’t been abused YET by these slimes...

But a big majority of Republicans voteđ for it to be brought to the floor knowing that it would pass. Our Tea Party Republicans, when they get to Washington are just Republicans i.e. politicians and out to get rich in as short a time as possible. One can't get rich doing what one was elected to do. One must get with the system; then it doesn't matter terribly if, in the next election he loses. An Easy Street address has has been assured.

The Tea Party is not going to do us much good because most of them turn into Republican Establishment types once in office, or simply had no actual principles but said all the right conservative things to get elected.

It’s a “first responders” and judicial regime. They now have full discretion over even larger private estates of their neighbors.

What the hell was he thinking? Does he really believe this bill is going to be used to help people? Is he really that stupid?

I'm female. I take offense to the republican parties abuse of my personal freedoms. Can I have them all arrested now? Where do my new super powers end?

It’s all about keeping women on the plantation. It’s politics and now Democrats can say, “Conservatives don’t care about women.”

Of course, the bumper sticker will read:
Candidate X voted against the Violence Against Women Act, Why?

They weren't incumbents and they weren't democrats. That was enough, right?

So if I hate my Liberal boss I should annoy them until they snap at me and yell at me then I can get their voting rights taken away????

That's correct; they'll only get to vote twice instead of three times.
