Teenager spotted walking 10 MILES in the snow to interview for $7-an-hour job is given work

A teen's luck appears to have changed after a chance encounter with an Indiana restaurant owner during a 10-mile trek through ice and snow for a minimum wage job interview.

It all started on Friday, when Art Bouvier, the proprietor of Papa Roux, a Cajun restaurant in Indianapolis, was laying rock salt outside the establishment after an ice storm earlier that morning.

He said he was approached by a teen who asked him how far it was to 10th and Sherman.

Mr Bouvier told WLFI-TV: 'And I'm thinking we're at 10th and Post. I said, "Buddy that's probably six, seven miles." I said, "You'd be better off on a bus especially in this weather." He just said, "Okay, thank you." And he kept going.'

Later, as Mr Bouvier was driving with his wife to a coffee shop, he was surprised to find the same person, still walking.

They pulled over, and asked him if he needed a ride.

The teen, Jhaqueil Reagan, obliged, and along the way, he told the couple that he was going to a Dairy Queen location for a job interview, and didn't have money for bus fare.

He said that he had already walked three miles before he reached Papa Roux.

Mr Bouvier told Fox 59: 'I'm thinking to myself, here’s a kid walking almost 10 miles in the ice and slush and snow for the hope of a job at minimum wage.

Who picks up hitchhikers anymore, anyway? You gotta be nuts to even think about doing that.

Reagan said it’s been hard finding opportunities. He was forced to quit school two years ago when his mother died. He completed his GED while staying home to care for his siblings.

Where do you find that Reagan is his first name? I googled him, he’s on some social networking sites, he’s on youtube etc and in not a single place does it have Reagan as a first name. Always dead last. Full name appears to be Jhaqueil DamianJoel Reagan, and yes, DamianJoel appears with no space between.

This brought tears to my ears. What a lovely end to his story.

Apparently, it is not the Bus company giving him a year’s pass but someone who works there according to Papa Roux’s facebook page.

a 31 day pass is $60. hope she got a discount.

His picture is all over the place and he’s on youtube as well. Does not appear to be black. He’s shown standing next to a black man - the restaurant owner who gave him a ride and later a job? - and the difference in skin color is very obvious. And the black man isn’t even all that dark. That’s why some folks are wondering about the name jhaqueil for a white guy.

That said, I’m against hitchhiking or picking up hitchhikers, for obvious safety reasons.

There ARE people who have zero money and are out on the street with nothing but a few possessions in a backpack
There are NO people with zero money (see your state's welfare budget for details) and the ones you refer to are homeless - overwhelmingly by choice.

Few people will pick up a black teen hitchhiker
Where does it say he's black - or did you just assume it?

Yeah this story is all over the local news here in Indy.
He sure looks like a white kid to me.
The guy that runs the restaurant and hired him is a Cajun I think, displaced by Katrina and moved here and opened a restaurant.

He’s not black that I can see and he’s on tv quite a bit locally because of the “feel good” story.
But I would say in the era of Baraq, hardly anybody will pick up hitchhikers of any sort.
Too many bad outcomes.

Until minimum wage was invented black teens had much
lower unemployment rates than whites. The whole idea of
minimum wage was to keep the coloreds from undercutting
white folks’ wages. Blacks used to be ambitious and hard
working, until the government made good and sure to knock
the starch out of them by bribing their women to have kids
out of wedlock and keeping them from ever getting entry level jobs.
true...back in the late '70s/early '80s; Paul Harvey & Ronald Reagan...
both brought those points to the airwaves. Did you know many Union Labor
Contracts, have automatic pricing mechanisms / clauses; which are based
on the "Minimum Wage"

It’s on the other side of town, so I’ve never been there.
In interviews the guy seems like a go-getter.
Instead of whining about Katrina and looking for a FEMA trailer, he came up here and provided authentic Cajun restaurant (something not common here) and apparently prospered.

Hell, I would have given him a job right then and there, too.

Maybe he knew what PRESIDENT REAGAN did for the USA.

7 dollars an hour?

They are pay adults 7, 8 and 9 bucks an hour...You know, 1990 wages.

They work most of the week for gas, and food. Anything else, forget it....
