: What happened to the Golden State?
Washington Examiner ^ | February 24, 2013 | Conn Carroll

Posted on 02/25/2013 6:45:43 PM PST by Hojczyk

California is no longer a model that other states want to or should emulate. It currently has the nation's third highest unemployment rate, its highest poverty rate and more than one-third of the nation's welfare recipients.

To make a long story short, the same political constituencies that have made Brown's Democratic Party invincible at the ballot box have also made the state unable to compete economically.

These unions also make it impossible to improve how government services are delivered to taxpayers. As a result, while California once had the most admired education system in the nation, it now ranks near the bottom in almost every measured educational category.

The state's powerful environmental lobby has secured a slew of green energy regulations, including strict clean air rules, the nation's first carbon cap-and-trade program and an ambitious renewable energy mandate. As a result, energy prices have shot up, consumers now have less to spend on everything else they need to survive, and many manufacturers can't stay profitable in the state

Over the next four days, The Washington Examiner will look at what ails California, and how it got to its current state of failure. We will look at the state's out-of-control budget and debt, the powerful union interests driving it, the decline of its education system, the failure of its "clean energy" initiatives and the environmental regulations that are wrecking the economy in many regions of the state.

CA has passed the tipping point. There is no return. Even when it finally crashes, it can’t be rebuilt, because the same cast of characters that brought it down will still be in place. CA will become a third world state.

We should be building a fence between California and America.

What’s wrong?

In a word: Marxism.

The people of California mistakenly believe they can use Marx’s ideas to help the middle class.

But that’s as insane as arguing you can use Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.

They’re antithetical philosophies.

Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto as a recipe to get rid of the middle class. California has adopted his ideas - from a progressive tax code to doing more things by hand to dissolving the border.

And then everyone wonders what happened?

So now you’re left with Communism: a rich, upper elite running a system for the happy little peasants.

Want the middle class back? You’ll have to dump the Marxism.

Good luck doing that in California.

What happened to CA is the same thing that happened to New York. You have a high concentration of the population in an urban area that is very very liberal as well as huge “consumers” of government handouts and that same area has the population numbers to control the elections.

Like New York, California was once a great state.

Now both are so far gone, so screwed up and so in the hole that the only ending I see is a complete crash.

I don’t see where either one can be saved at this point.

The only hope for either one, IMHO, is if it plays out much like the ending of “Atlas Shrugged”.

I hope we survive long enough for the “way” (to be) “clear”.

All obvious answere aside, from someone that lived through the period from splendor to squalor:

A massive influx of NY'rs in the 70's along with other northeast liberals, and of course the unchecked Mexican invasion. The illegals overloaded the system, and the new resident liberals refused all attempts to pass laws to control them.

Boxer is an excellent example of what invaded the state from the NE.

I’m sure that the vast majority of the current residents of Californicate are very happy with the current state of the “Golden State” ... or else they would change things.

Thank God this lifelong right coaster's Cali vacation was in the summer of '81 (San Diego, Santa Monica, Morro Bay, Carmel, SF), not long before things began to get really rotten there. Don't know about other parts of the Golden State, but I like to think the 1984 Olympics was L.A.'s last hurrah.

Finally, someone else who can see beyond the end of their nose! What has happened in California is a direct result of “the Liberal Migration” from places like New York. These trolls, after succeeding in the destruction of their “nests” on the East Coast, went looking for another place to take a crap, and unfortunately, found California. The really sad thing is all these morons on FR who counsel “cutting California loose” can’t see that no matter where they are currently residing, the “Liberal Seeds” are already there and sprouting. They seem to be saying “we’ve got ours” (for the time being) so what the hell do we care about the rest of the country. Let’s “pontificate” on FR about how smart we are!

California will just keep doing the same as long as their checks are accepted.
