Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died peacefully at his home on Monday, Dartmouth College said. He was 96.

Koop served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989, under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

He was outspoken on public health issues and did much to elevate the office of the surgeon general.

Having been a Surgeon General was of no help in the end!

True story — Chick Coop operated on me in 1977 when I was six-years-old and saved my life. I am a little sad. He was a good man.

He struggled with his dihydrogen monoxide addiction for years but it appears that he lost the battle in the end.

I took an instant like to him when he admitted he smoked cigars, and didn't intend to quit. He seemed like a man that was connected to reality.

"Koop is survived by his wife, three children and eight grandchildren. His first wife died in 2007."

Wait. Did he really remarry at age 90 plus?

Yeah, he liked cigars, but he couldn’t keep one in his mouth all the time.

RIP.

If he was OK with Ronaldus Maximus he was certainly good enough for me.

Sang a song for him once. Standing on the sidewalk, outside the hotel he was staying at in Philadelphia (now the Doubletree, had a different name back in 1981). With a bunch of fairly inebriated medical students.

He didn’t come to his window.

RIP Dr. Koop.

Since he stopped smoking I was sure he was going to live forever. Guess eventually we all die of nothing.

He was 96, obviously a crocodile hunting accident to take someone so young.
