Jon Huntsman, a conservative & a Mormon, says legalizing same-sex marriage is...‘right thing to do’
MSNBC.com ^ | Feb. 21, 2013 | Traci G. Lee

Former Utah governor and presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman is speaking out in favor of marriage equality, arguing that it is a “conservative cause” that the Republican Party should support. In an op-ed for The American Conservative, Huntsman writes about his time as governor of Utah during which he pushed for civil unions and equality for the LGBTQ community, and adds that the GOP now has the opportunity to do more.

“Conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry,” Huntsman writes...

Huntsman’s pro-marriage equality stance is not only a symbolic step forward for conservatives, but for Mormons as well. “Over the last several years we have been seeing more and more Mormons from across the political spectrum come out in support of marriage equality,” said Spencer W. Clark, executive director of Mormons for Marriage Equality, in a recent statement. “I am thrilled that Gov. Huntsman has taken this stand and hope that it will prompt other Mormons to join us in building stronger families by ensuring that same-sex couples and their children have access to the same protection and benefits under the law that my family has.”

What is marriage? If it is a legal contract for the purposes of hospital visitation, wills, etc. then go for it. If it is still a man and woman becoming one and all that that entails, then no.

Barrack Obama, a conservative, says that...

Bill Ayers, a conservative, says that..

Saying it doesn't make it so.

He's from Utah, and a Mormon. What about polygamy? Shouldn't he be more concerned about that? (I'd like to know why the polygamists aren't demanding their rights, too. Every other freakish group is).

presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman is speaking out in favor of marriage equality

Which is why this homo lover didn't stand a chance. No normal person would even consider voting for this creep.

Huntsman is a “conservative” like Obama is a champion skeet shooter, Biden is a home defense expert and Helen Thomas is a beauty queen.

I first saw that little wimp in the primary races last year and was NOT DEFINITELY IMPRESSED with is feminine demeanor.
I told everyone in the room that that SOB was a queer. The more I saw him, the more I was absolutely certain.
Now, he proves to the whole world that he is a stealth queer.

Yep. Which is why so many people were turned off by him. Ewwwww!
(Oboma tried to hide his for awhile. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of obomas feminine side now that he can'r run again.)

Exactly. The government has show itself no longer capable of defining marriage, at least at the federal level and the handful of states which have declared it such.

Get government out of the marriage business completely and leave it to the churches. The government can concentrate on defining civil unions or whatever other pseudonym they wish to apply to it.

That bird has flown most likely, the state is never giving up the institution at this point, for two simple reasons. One, it provides massive control of the culture. Two, the statists, leftists, and homosexualists need a way to punish those who will never buy into whatever impossibility the state decides to call marriage at the time, and they don’t have a way to do that without the state involved.

Pope Leo XIII warned about the danger of the state’s involvement 130 years ago.

Anyone who approves of legalizing same sex marriage is not a conservative. That flies directly in the face of what it means to be a conservative...."preserving important values, procedures, etc."

Same sex marriage makes our culture more deadly for our posterity, it unnecessarily increases costs for absolutely no good reason, and, given heterosexual fertility, it deprives children of their right to be raised by their father and their mother.

Why is this news?

(Why don't you take the time to ask MSNBC -- and the dozens of OTHER media outlets who will be picking up this story?)

Perhaps it hasn't something to do, Teppe, with the reality that we know of only ONE GoP presidential candidate who has now advocated for the overhaul of one-man, one-woman marriage...and that's Jon Huntsman, a Mormon.

Oh...hold it...allow me to refine that a bit...Huntsman might be the FIRST GoP candidate to attack one-man, one-woman marriage, but he is the SECOND Mormon to attack one-man, one-woman marriage...'cause in 1844...Joseph Smith the polygamist was a self-proclaimed candidate for POTUS!

Get government out of the marriage business completely and leave it to the churches.

#1...IF EVERY relationship can be deemed a "marriage" -- then NOTHING is "marriage."

What? Siblings can marry, Vig? Pets? Group marriage? Why let "govt" restrict the # of partners, Vig? Govt shouldn't set any standards for age restrictions? Any child can "marry" oh libertarian one? And a harem? Polygamy now brought back, eh Vig?

#2...As long as a govt proposed huge safety nets for broken families [this week a PA paper researched a mom of two who earned $19,000 a year and determined she has access to about $82,000 of govt funding each year in terms of cash, staples & services]...then govt has an obligation to reinforce healthy families.

If govt would 100% stop footing the bill for broken families, then at least this secondary argument wouldn't apply. But it does apply precisely because of how we taxpayers foot MOST of the bill for experimental relationships.

In whose mind is that assclown a conservative? There is a reason he bailed out of the Republican primary contest. For God’s sake, he served Obama...no one in their right mind thinks Jon Huntsman is a conservative. No one.

Yes, especially since the churches have proven themselves so adept at enforcing the child support and property settlement arrangements incidental to divorce. In particular, churches have been singularly instrumental in safeguarding the rights of the parties (including the children) in marriages where one or more of the parties is not a member of a church. (Insert "rolleyes" smiley here to denote abject puzzlement.)
