Would New Gun Laws Spark Widespread Civil Disobedience?
PJ Media ^ | Feb 17, 2013 | Paul Hsieh

his State of the Union address, President Obama doubled down on his gun-control proposals, again demanding that Congress ban so-called “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazines.” This is not a surprise. What has been a surprise are the increasingly open calls for defiance from gun owners, state legislatures, and local law enforcement. If the president’s proposals become law, he may move the country into turbulent waters we haven’t seen in many years.

Gun control has long been a controversial issue in American politics. However, there are three aspects to this issue that make this more volatile than other hot topics such as taxes, foreign policy, or abortion:

1) The strongest advocates of each side hold fundamentally irreconcilable positions.

On one hand, committed gun-control advocates say: “No one should be allowed to own certain weapons.” On the other hand, equally committed gun-rights advocates say: “No way in hell are we giving up these weapons.”

2) Ordinary Americans have declared their willingness to disobey the law.

New York state has already passed laws similar to Obama’s proposals. Gun owners there are now organizing a campaign of open civil disobedience, daring state officials to “come and take” their rifles. State officials already acknowledge that they will be unable to enforce the new law.

3) Local law enforcement officials and state governments have also vowed civil disobedience.

Over 280 sheriffs and eight state sheriffs’ associations have vowed to protect citizens’ Second Amendment rights against new gun laws.

The Utah Sheriffs’ Association used unusually strong language:

We, like you, swore a solemn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and we are prepared to trade our lives for the preservation of its traditional interpretation.

Similarly, several state legislatures are considering laws to stop federal officials from enforcing new gun laws

When the vote is fraudulent and elections are stolen, then what is your direction???

If you aren’t willing to die for your freedom, then you are already lost....

Instead of taking this approach, let us start discussing how a Constitutional Convention would repair the relationship between the people and the government. Even the discussion will drive the left (er, now “progressive”) nuts because it is a far greater threat to their power and their agenda than anyone in the “molon labe” crowd would ever be.

We simply need One Law to Rule Them All:

“The Federal government shall leave the States and the People the f*** alone.”

Madison, bless his heart, was simply not cynical enough about human nature.

RANT ON .... The majority of Americans (an overwhelming majority are law-abiding) and desire not this cup to be placed before them. Given the demographics of America, obama would be ignorant (a kind word for what am thinking) to attempt to start a war between the law-abiding Constitutional and God Given Rights Advocates verses the anti-constitution crowd. If I were in a position of power, I would ask our Navy to guard our shores, for there is a matter of Constitutional and God Given Rights to be decided, and then I would pray. Then I would hold onto my protection and my family and ask for God’s Mercy, as never before, and pray this cup from which I and my family are being forced to drink be removed. If my prayers went unheard, may God help me and mine for I will not surrender my protection for myself or my family. History has taught me well enough to know, if I give up my protection, I am defenseless against tyranny. Only a fool would want to test America in this manner. Should obama and the anti-constitutional crowd be fools, so be it. RANT OFF

There will be some whack-job that will have a shoot-out with the cops, get killed and will immediately be labeled a poster-boy for the Tea-party or NRA by the complicit media.

Yep, had had that wacko Dorner not write that manifesto claiming his liberal allegiance he could have easily been the poster boy you mention.

Too bad more here don't see that instead of having knee jerk reactions to those of us questioning police tactics..

We can't get the Government to abide by the Constitution we have now, what good would a CC be?

When socfflaws are banned ...only outlaws will be scofflaws.

“Well, the nation survived 15 years of widespread civil disobedience while the 18th amendment was in effect, and it was finally ended legally. I’m hopeful that we will get through this too.”

Your dreaming if you think that will happen. This will not end peacefully or “legally” ... only in bloodshed and hopefully with amerika divided into two countries ... a free state and they can have the slave state.

“he will call for martial law and invite UN troops in”

That won’t help him at all. They’d be outgunned, outmanned, on foreign territory, and undertrained. Further, after exercising their ‘rape right’ a couple of times, they’d all be found hanged from utility poles.

I see Dorner as being a real life example of what a Henry Bowman might expect to be able to achieve given the set of tactical choices make by Dorner.

It's a life lesson.

>>However, I disagree with you that the fight has been lost. When we can no longer vote, then the fight will have been totally lost. Until then we can throw the numskulls out of office....and that doesn’t require killing or being killed.

I honestly hope I am wrong, but I doubt it. We have reached the tipping point, more ‘takers’ than ‘makers’, and politicians of both parties that do nothing but pass laws each and every day to make us less free. When you have a lock on more than 50% of the vote, by promising free stuff and making someone else pay for everything, you can pretty much stay in power for ever and count on the unequivocal support of the takers.

Story, after story every single day about how our rights are being eroded, all in the name of ‘national security’ and no matter how egregious the government behaves, you can still count on huge number of people getting on board.

There was a survey done (can’t find link) that determined that nearly 1 out of 3 Americans would accept a body cavity search as a pre-condition to getting on a plane - if that is indeed true, then there is NO hope for this country. If 1 out of 3 people are willing to have a TSA agent stick his finder where the sun doesn’t shine as a condition of getting on a plane, how is it even possible that we can find 51% of the people that are unwilling to give up their guns?

qwerty...no disrespect to you as I agree that many in this country have become sheep...however, as someone more insightful than me once said “soldiers, (or militia, or partisans), don’t fight because the hate who is in front of them, but because they love those who are behind them.”

This whole gun control debate isn’t about guns, isn’t about black metal and plastic objects(firearms), it’s about a free people’s ability to protect themselves and those they love standing behind them from those in front of them who want our guns so they can do things to us that they can only do if we’re unarmed.

I’m not a kook, I’m not an arm chair commando, I’m not even particularly brave...but I, along with millions of others will not consent to become slaves either.

“The fight has been fought - we lost.”

Well, the proof is in the pudding, and the first armed shootout over the Second Amendment where LEOs come to take legally owned guns just because the law changed, hasn’t happened - yet.

And when it does, it will be The Shot Heard Round the World, II.

Consider this: the recent meteorite explosion in Russia was recorded on dashcams mounted in private automobles. Russian drivers have to deal with corrupt Russian police, and dashcams are their defense to record evidence of shakedowns or other malfeasance.

How many Americans have mounted dashcams due to fear of police brutality on our streets & highways? Very few, because most of us do not yet fear the police as unaccountable. But that’s changing and when/if police are sent to confiscate citizens’ guns, these incidents will be recorded, go viral, and start a revolution.

“But, I can guarantee you, if he could take all our guns, he would.”

And people will take note of this, and when the SHTF, this man will be unable to walk the streets in your area, and if he does, he will quickly realize the folly of both his perceived power and his stated positions on the matter heretofore.

Yes, let them tell us what they think, it helps us to identify them and to form an appropriate response when the time arrives.

The police already are unaccountable in almost all cases - no matter what they do, even when its caught on film. You can read stories every single day where the cops literally, and figuratively, get away with murder day, after day after day.
